Sorry Poms. Souffle is right and I didn't check the post date. Now I'm embarrassed. Ahem.

It's ok. Jam was with The Cloud my first robo and such an unbelievably special little guy. I'm just so thankful he survived to have the lovely life he did.

I am so glad I read this post. I am so glad Jam recovered to live a full and happy life. I have only just started keeping hamsters. I too made the same mistake of thinking that fluffy bedding would be nice for the winter. It says it is "digestible" on the packet, but I have removed all traces of it now. I am using shredded loo roll in one nest and straw in the other and I will see which one they prefer (so that I know which one to use in the future). Thank you Pompompoms for allowing this thread to be accessible to everyone, even though Jam has passed. I think I will follow your lead and also start speaking to people in pet shops about the dangers of such bedding.

This post is crazy. That stuff should be taken off the market. No one would buy it if they knew would could happen. It came in a tube i got for my piggies but i took it out once i was told it was unsafe so thankfully nothing happened to them. I wonder if there is a way to get it forced off the market.

OK, so yesterday I read this post for the first time and immediately removed all traces of fluffy bedding from Hannah and Sophie's cage and replaced it with loads of shredded toilet paper and a bit of organic (soft not spiky) hay. This morning I awoke to find all of the new bedding material strewn across all of their cage and the two of them huddled in their nest shivering!!!

I mean is this some king of fluffy bedding protest?! I have turned the heating up to full and drawn the curtain to stop any drafts. I have refilled their nest with TP and hay and they are just going to have to get used to it because there is no way I am going to give them fluffy bedding again!

Have any of you ever had this experience after changing bedding material (not specifically fluffy style, just any bedding in general?)

A xxx

They have warmed up nicely now and are sleeping soundly - I thought I would update in case any of you were worried about them. I will be with them all day to keep an eye on them but I think they are fine, they were just being silly little fluff fluffs!

Some of my hams sometimes do that if I don't shred the paper first.

It takes them a while to learn how to make a nest out of toilet paper etc, fluffy bedding is for lazy hams! Once they learn though, it takes up quite a lot of their time ^.^
