Thank you. I totally agree, the reality of either having or reading a first hand experience brings it home how serious this issue is. My beautiful little Jam bug is at the bridge now, but he did fully recover and have a lovely long happy life before it was his time.

Yeah, I know Jam has gone, but its still good he recovered to enjoy the rest of his life

And yeah, its surprising how much of a difference reading this made. I'll be linking to this in threads about fluffy bedding from now on, it'll have much more of an impact than the vague words I usually say, and definetly more of an impact than when everyone just says that its bad without explaining why properly.

I agree with racing hamster about getting the vet and if possible using this thread (or email) to send to p@h as evidence, or even sending it to the manufacturers as evidence that their safe wooly stuff is in fact not safe, something ham owners have been arguing over for years.

I am so pleased your lil one has made a full recovery, poor lil boy. There's nothing worse than a sick ham. I bet he doesn't know he's famous by having a sticky thread!

Please note that this thread is from 2009 and Jam has now passed to the bridge after a long and happy life after his problems with the bedding.
It is important to read the full thread so as not to upset anyone.
This thread has been stickied to illustrate the dangers of fluffy bedding with Pompompom's permission in the hope that it can save other hamsters suffering.

So sorry, I didn`t realise the little one had passed on. But if something good comes of his life, he has done the hamster nation proud. x

Awww this made me cry because I was so relieved to hear he recovered and then I saw the dates. I'm glad he recovered though, and absolutely fair play to the company for paying the vet bills, you certainly wouldn't get that here.

It's definitely very important to keep highlighting the dangers of not just fluffy bedding, but of taking packaging at it's word without researching - just because a package says its contents are safe and suitable for all hams does NOT mean it's the case! I myself didn't know until my most recent ham that this type of bedding is unsafe, and luckily I never had any problems, but I use toilet paper now!

Thank you. It's ok, my little Jam as Souffle says did have a long and happy life. He passed a year ago now last Friday, but his nephews and great nephews live with me still, Whizzbit is pretty much colour wise a replica of dad The Cloud, but is a mini Jam in personality.

When it happened, I wrote to p@H and Rotastack with my personal account and the vet report. Omitting no details of how awful his ordeal was. P@H replied that they were unaware of the dangers, and perhaps Rotastack would consider relabeling the product stating it would only be suitable for larger animals (Like what? elephants? Because no animals sold in P@H should have it).

Rotastack replied that they sell thousands of bags of the product, and that only rarely do they get a report of injury or fatality. Oh that's ok then, as long as only some animals are suffering and that's only the ones they know about.

I now turn vigilante instead, and talk nicely to people I have seen buy it when they get to the carpark, I also hide it behind all the other bedding.

Exactly! Most people who buy it, and have had injured rodents from it probably didn't know the cause because they hadn't got enough knowledge or don't search for the cause, so they wouldn't think to report the illness/death to the company!

This thread is perfect for displaying the issues of fluffy bedding. If only every small animal owner had a look at this before buying the pet.

That's disgusting, what Rotastack said. If there was a product on ANY human market that 'rarely injured or killed' a human being when 'they sell thousands of the product', there would be UPROAR, and it would immediately taken off the market, but when it's only small fluffies it's fine?? Ugh. Never purchased anything from Rotastack, and now I never, ever will.

Also fair play to you for going vigilante haha! Has anyone ever been rude when you've stopped them in the car park?
