Sewn fabrics or fleeces of any type are not suitable to be left in cages with hamsters. They are OK for supervised use but I would never risk them in the cage. You may think your hamster does not chew then one night it discovers it can chew bedding and ends up with loads in the tummy or thread wrapped round the teeth or feet and choking or losing a limb
Even cotton wool pods, even though they are natural have very strong dense fibres which the hamster cannot digest quickly enough to prevent a gut blockage.
Take some loo roll and put it in water - see what happens? It dissolves very quickly into soft loose fibres. That would happen if a hamster ate it. Harmless.
Take a cotton wool ball and do the same. What happens?
Same applies to socks and fleeces and cotton material.

I recently bought a nest thing for my dwarf hamsters and they love the soft bedding that came with it, but after reading this I took it out immediately. It was very fiberous and stringy and it probably would have been very bad if they ingested some of it. Good thing you posted this! It's awesome that your ham recovered too!

It is awful to think they are allowed to manufacture a product that makes hamsters and other small furries so ill. I signed a petition to ban it a few weeks ago, not sure which site though. x

Wow, what a scary thing. I used to use this stuff all the time and had no idea how bad it could be. I don't use it anymore though simply because Jake doesn't care for it. But I won't be buying it in the future either. Thanks for the warning.

Unhappy Re: Poorly Robo *THE DANGERS OF FLUFFY BEDDING*

My Syrian got a section of the whole chunk of bedding stuck to the inside of his pouch - when I found him his pouch was inverted - being pulled out by the weight of the rest of the bedding.

I quickly cut the vast majority off, and dabbed the area with water until it came off - needless to say I would NEVER use this bedding ever again and I really have no idea how pet stores can sell it when it is so dangerous to small animals!!

Hi. My Fancy Russian Dwarf hamster has no problem with fluffy bedding, but now I am worried. He carries it in his mouth. (I know that because he puts it in his hamster ball/wheel, which is attached to the cage.) I thought it was BETTER for hamsters. Here's the brand:

All Living Things: Scent Free Paper Pet Bedding

Because it's paper based it's ok, the stuff we're talking about is long-fibred, cottony materials. Not to worry

Exclamation Re: Poorly Robo *THE DANGERS OF FLUFFY BEDDING*

I think your robo has Wet Tail! So do mine right now! By your description, your hammy most likely has it. Act fast, cause it is fatal. Buy some Wet Tail Drops. We got ours over the counter from Pet smart. Separate your hammy from your other animals and quarantine him. Clean all things he has touched, (My 2 robos have wet tail and it took my 5 hours to clean everything!) Because it is contagious and your hamster could catch it again if the virus is still on something that he will go by in the future. I doubt its fluffy bedding, unless your robo is a chewer or a curious one.

HoppyHammy, this thread is ages old, and stickied to warn about the dangers of Fluffy bedding. It WAS fluffy bedding that caused this hamsters problem. If your robos are displaying similar symptoms and you are using fluffy bedding, REMOVE IT IMMEDIATELY, and take your robos to a vet as soon as possible. Fluffy bedding is insanely dangerous and there's loads of petitions to get it banned from pet stores.

Furthermore, wet tail drops do NOT cure wet tail, only disguise the symptoms, and only Syrian hamsters can be infected with Wet Tail. Robos or other species can suffer from diarrhea, but it is not the same thing.

I'd encourage you to read the full thread before posting in the future.
