I never knew hamster fluffy bedding was so dangerous! Defo not going to stock in EVER AGAIN! I always use paper bedding for all my fluffs but to be honest the fluffy bedding is one of our best sellers :/

It's shocking how products like these are available cheaply and easily with false claims :/

Woodshavings too, i have had alot of problems with that!

Maybe you could do some sort of poster or display to explain to people why you are no longer choosing to stock it? I know I'd be impressed with a shop that had made that choice

I whole heartedly agree with evel_lin, most people who buy this bedding have no idea that it's bad for hams. I know when I was younger (many years ago now) I bought it, under the assumption that if it was bad they wouldn't sell it!

If stores simply don't stock it, people may just go to other stores that do, however if there are notices in the bedding section explaining why it's not there, hopefully people can then make the informed decision.

I will make a notice in the bedding section and explain to people why it will no longer be stocked to make people aware. Will put something on our facebook page too so hopefully word will spread. I know some people at the local newspaper too might see if they would be interested in doing an article on the matter.

People wouldn't buy it is they knew, toilet paper and a wee drop of hay makes the most interesting beds for hammies anyway. And it's cheaper and safer.

Will up date you on my progress of banning it and look into other types of bedding to stock.

Rotastak for example is defo something we do not stock AT ALL. Might start a thread to get some feedback on decent SAFE hamster products too stock

Hey I used to have the fluffy bedding as well, but as i found it was dangerous i removed it immidiately. I have now just toilet paper shredded for him but he doesnt quite seems to like it yet. I've been thinking on giving him a carbox so he could sleep in there or maybe one of those things like in the pictures.. If i had one of those would my hamster be ok without any extra nesting material?

I just want to chime in here -- when we say fluffy bedding, are we talking about this (which I use) or the actual cotton-like bedding? Because I've seen the cotton-looking products which are allegedly great for nesting, but I haven't tried them.

Recently my hammy developed a respiratory infection and my vet said it could've had something to do with the bedding. Is hay really the best option/alternative?

its actually easy to make the one in the second picture, just fill a sock with cotton wool and sew/ tie it together to make a ring, and stick a base on it

Might be better to stuff the sock with toilet roll or kitchen roll, that way if hammy chews through the sock the stuffing is safe. Or you could even tie the sock and replace the toilet roll as needed or wash the sock if needed.
