I am very alarmed to read these reports of the dangers of the fluffy bedding..my Hum got an abscess when he was on meadow hay bedding when he was given to me,and since then I put him on shredded bedding, but now it's winter,I thought I'd try the fluffy stuff as it looked soft and warm, and I assumed it had been safety trialled before it could be sold in petshops. Obviously I'm wrong. So far Hum hasn't had any misfortunes with this bedding, which he's been on since October, but I don't think I'll chance it,I will change back to the shredded tissue type.I would hate anything to happen to him.

I really found your post interesting Tammy22 as I feel that is
What my Bruno died of. The vet said it was pneumonia but
His symptoms seemed to be the same as Robo’s. Now that
I have replaced Bruno, I took the very hard decision of having
him put down, I have put very tiny shreaded paper in the bed
of my new hamster Ed now and refused to buy anymore fluffy
bedding. Many thanks for that, as a person new to keeping
hamsters, this forum is fab for getting new ideas and advice!!.

Oh Pompompoms. I started reading your thread from the beginning and my emotions went up and down as Robo 's health went up and down. The one with Robo leaning against the water bottle freaked me out. I thought that was it for him! Then I got to the last one. Your Vet is a dream. It took me forever to find a vet who would even look at hammys and he charges a fortune just to look at them. Your vet really knows her stuff. Without her Robo wouldn't have made it. There's just no way he could have moved all that without help. What a nightmare! I am so happy Robo is okay.

Oh thank you lord. And Butternut and HadleyHam too!. I ran inside to check out my bedding, I use Carefresh, and read the whole thing. I was just going to ask about Carefresh but saw Butternut's post and HadleyHam's answer. Whew! I'm safe and so is Patches. This site is really wonderful. I didn't know anything about "fluffy bedding". What a nightmare and how rotten can any company be to sell a product they know will hurt our pets? Some of the ideas on how to inform other people are really good. Will they work? Maybe. If enough people talk about it lots of hammys will be safer and owners will be spared what Pompompoms went through. Doing nothing will definitely not help.
I've learned so much in the few days since I've been on this site. I've never heard the term "stickied" before...now I know what it is...and that Robo's experience happened a long time ago and that he's since had a great life and moved on. I look foreward to learning much more.

At first I freaked out when I read this post!

My other hammy is currently at the Petco vet for having an impacted cheek pouch caused by - of all things - carefresh bedding. At first, that's what I thought you guys were talking about After further perusing, I realized it's not what you're talking about, thank god.

However, it is interesting to note that Carefresh can cause problems, too. Although his wasn't fully internal, it sure freaked me out a bunch. Do you think there's a link with all of that puffy type material?

I suppose it's very dry and designed to absorb water so if a hamster put it in its cheek then I can see how it could stick there. I don't really know though!

Thank you so much for this post! I'll never provide fluff to a hamster again, I was completely unaware how dangerous it could be!
