New baby Dwarf Hamster head leaning/tilting?
I haven't owned any Dwarfies in quite a few years so I may just be worrying over nothing, but here we are.
So an hour ago I came back with a young Russian Dwarf ham, and within a few minutes of watching him I noticed he will tilt his head to the right when he stops moving. I pointed it out to a housemate and they noticed it too when they knew what they were looking for.
So when he stops his whole head will turn with a slight tilt towards the right, almost like he's 'scanning the horizon'. He keeps going until it puts him off balance and then he'll continue moving, or in some cases, he'll keep going until something prevents his head from moving any further. I have noticed that it will also cause his left paw to lift up and sort of flop and drag, as though he's about to fall over. I haven't actually seen him fall but considering what I know of worst-case when it comes to head tilts, and I have only just got him, I'm concerned.

Hello there. I am not an expert in health issues, but some dwarf hamsters can have neurological issues. Where did you get him from and how old is he? Also how long have you had him at home now?

I got him from a Pets at Home branch near me, and he's been at home for... about 3-4 hours now? He's probably about 2 months old judging by how old PetsAtHome like to sell them around, he really is a baby.

It's possible he does have a neurological problem, something some Russians & Robos can be prone to but if it's mostly head tilting it's also possible he has an ear problem.
It's not really possible to guess but I would get him checked out by a vet.

Re: New baby Dwarf Hamster head leaning/tilting?
He has been named! Flynn. So now I have Errol and Flynn. xD
I will see if I can get a video of him doing it later. PaH comes with a free first-health check by a vet within a week or two of getting them so I'll be doing that. My first thought jumped to tumor but yeah, I also considered ear infection because it does jsut appear to be a lean/balance rather than a head tilt. If it was just a head tilt I would be assuming tumor. These guys are so small it's hard to diagnose on sight and limited info.

I'm so sorry to hear about Flynn. I would definitely get him checked by a vet as soon as possible. I hope that it is just an ear infection and that he will be fine soon. Best of luck and keep us updated whenever you have a chance.

I would be tempted to take him to your own vet even if Pets at Home offer a free check, just to make sure it's an independant check and by a good vet. Maybe after giving him a few days to settle in.
