Re: Syrian hamster has a bald spot.
Where abouts on the neck?
Is there anything in his cage he could off rubbed against or anything sharp?

Re: Syrian hamster has a bald spot.
Is it on the back of the neck? If so, my long haired syrian ham has the same thing. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow afternoon. In the mean time, I am giving him flax seeds and primrose oil to help as well as making sure he gets protein supplements such as chicken as per usual.

Re: Syrian hamster has a bald spot.
I've had this happen with a hamster who would sit in the door of a hooded potty or wooden house and the fur got rubbed off his neck! As soon as that was removed it grew back. It can also happen if the wheel is too small and the back or neck rubs on the spindle. With long haired hamsters the fur can get static and stand up on end and catch on the spindle and get ripped out even on a quite large wheel so check it for fur tangled round it.

Re: Syrian hamster has a bald spot.
Souffle Quigley has a 12 inch silent runner and the spindle is quite high so I don’t see how he could rub against it - besides which, there is no hair on it. I also cannot find any hair lying around his cage. There are a number of things I suppose he could be rubbing against: bridges, the bottom of his wheel, the entrance to his house. But, again, I can’t find any hair lying around. I also have not seen him itching that spot so it really is a mystery!
Sukirutski Interesting. The vet I am seeing tomorrow specialises in exotic animals, so I expect he will be able to cast some wisdom on what is going on with my little man. Although your ham’s hair loss could be caused by something completely different and only a vet could determine this, I will let you know what the vet says about my ham Quigley.

Re: Syrian hamster has a bald spot.
Just thought you might like to know how the vet trip went. The vet said that the most likely cause of the bald patch, especially considering its location and Quigley’s young age, is mites. Another possibility would have been ringworm but that usually causes very dry flaky skin and Quigley’s skin is not dry.
The vet gave Quigley an injection of mite treatment and in two weeks I need to give him three drops of liquid mite treatment on the back of his neck (this dose is calculated according to weight so will vary between hamsters).
Since Yamagi’s symptoms are similar to Quigley’s, I’d say the problem is most likely mites or ring worm if the skin is very dry and flaky.
Either way, the best thing to do will be to take him to the vet to get him checked out and treated. Ideally, you want to go to an exotics vet (hamsters count as exotic animals strangely!).
Good luck let us know how everything goes.
