Young long haired Syrian losing hair
Hello, my Male Syrian is about 5-6 months old and I have noticed that his hair is thinning and I am concerned about his increased appetite. He is a very fluffy guy with long satin fur but over the last few weeks I have noticed that the fur behind his ears is thinning and there is an area on the back of his neck where reddish/dark pink skin shows through. I have not seen any signs of mites and his skin is not flaky but he does groom very often. I was wondering if it could be an allergy to something... I use carefresh bedding and sterilized playsand so I do not think they are the culprits. Could his food be causing the reaction? He is on the oxbow pellets and the Kaytee fiesta mix but I just ordered him some Hazle hamster. He is acting normal but I've also noticed that he is eating a lot, and it is just his seed mix I can't tell if he is getting chunky or if it is just his fluffy fur. Everything that I look up on google is worst case sinario so I cannot get an idea of what I am dealing with. Should I make an appointment to our local smell pet vet or wait it out? Thank you!

Re: Young long haired Syrian losing hair
Hamsters can have allergies to lots of things but it's not common & it doesn't sound as though anything you use is likely to be causing an allergic reaction, it is possible that he may be lacking something in his diet but once you get him on to the Hazel hamster he should be getting all he needs.
Flax seeds & a drop of evening primrose oil can help with thinning hair.
You can't see mites but there is usually (but not always) quite a bit of scratching or over grooming with mites.
It's hard to guess from a description just how much of a problem it may or may not be, do you have a photo?
If you're concerned then I would get your vet to have a look.

Re: Young long haired Syrian losing hair
Long haired satins do tend to look a bit 'tatty' as they get older we have noticed. I think it is more the texture of the coat as the male hormones come through and with satin the fineness of the hairs can let you see through to the skin making them look very thin on top. Unless he is scratching and itchy I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe add some B vits in the form of some debittered brewers yeast mixed in with some oat porridge and give gim some extra green veggies like brocolli. Fur looks worse if it gets greasy so check it isn't getting rubbed by 'wheel spindle' oil and that his tubes and house are well ventilated. Brush with a toothbrush and dab any greasy areas with a tissue to absorb anything.
A vet would likely just treat for mites which it is very unlikely he has at this age and he would be even more greasy looking. You can trim off any long skirt to make him more fluffy looking as he won't mind that
