Hamster mouth tumor or abscess please help
My hamster is a syrian boy nearly 2 years old. In the picture attached is what he has been going through in the past 2 months. I have taken him to THREE different vets in my local area in the desperate need to get him help. All of them gave me antibiotics and none of them worked. Due to this they said it is probably a tumor. However if you look at it ... from what I have read online it doesnt look like a tumor as it is red and looks like an infection. It does however grow very quickly. I dont know what to do i run out of options all the vets tell me the same thing !! I have been feeding him baby food that has safe ingredients for hamsters because he cannot eat his hamster food anymore.

Re: Hamster mouth tumor or abscess please help
It looks like a tumour to me. It is likely coming from the pouch area which is why it is red. I'm so sorry this has happened but I would say this is not operable. Look deep in your heart and decide if his life has become a burden to him. It looks painful and he cannot eat and do normal hamstery things. He is quite an elderly lad now and you have tried your best for him. I think it is time to give him the greatest gift of all which is peaceful rest.
Be strong and remember your decision made from love is the right one.
I hope his path is gentle x

Re: Hamster mouth tumor or abscess please help
Thank you so much for your kind advice it really means a lot. I been searching and searching for answers in the hope that I would find good news but unfortunately it is what i been dreading to hear... he will be truly missed i have to think of him and not myself... something which will be very hard as he has been my bestfriend for the past two years .. I knew hamsters had short life spans but i wasnt prepared for this... time has just flown by... i loved him dearly and he will be truly missed. I am glad I was able to give him a lovely life with someone who truly cared about him..

So sorry Ren. It sounds like quite an aggressive tumour that would really impact his quality of life. Two years is a good, long life for a hamster and it sounds like you did everything right.
Sending sympathy to you both xx

Re: Hamster mouth tumor or abscess please help
I'm so sorry Ren to hear this, you've given your boy a wonderful life and that unconditional love you have is felt by us all.
I admire you for getting more than one opinion and sharing this with us.
You know deep down what you must do, it's a decision that I myself have had to make a few times over the years. Be sure to ask the vet if you can see him afterwards, I found doing that with Twinkle made me see how peaceful and pain free she looked. Big Hugs and I'm thinking of you xxx

I'm so sorry Ren, it must be devastating for you. The time does fly by so quick with them, you're right but it sounds like you have treasured every second with him. I'm sure you wll miss him so much but take comfort from the fact that you've gave him a loving home and I'm sure he enjoyed every second with you too. Hugs to you xx

Re: Hamster mouth tumor or abscess please help
Update: I took him to the vets today knowing there would be no hope. However, the vet said he would like to give him a chance before anything as he looks quite good for his age and told me he wants to try and remove the tumour. I accepted. He is now in surgery and we will see how he gets on! Thank you for all the kind advice and support!
