Default Tank cage in hot weather

We're expecting a massive heatwave in the UK soon and as I'll be moving my Syrian to a tank cage, and my dwarf is already in one, I was wondering what I can do to keep them both cool.

If the nest is in a corner or anywhere along the side of the tank, I stand an ice block (those blue things for coolboxes) by the side of the nest.

If the nest is in a house (Esmeralda has two nests at the moment!) I put a tile that has been in the freezer on top. I keep 3 in the freezer, so I can swap them around.

At the moment here in Sagunto it's 30º in the shade, and she seems to be coping well with the heat. She comes out in the evening when it drops down to about 25º.

I also give her cucumber pieces straight from the fridge during the day. I place them near her nest, she pops her head out when she smells them and pulls them in with her to snack on.

The most important thing is to keep the room as cool as possible, heat rises so as long as you have good ventilation at the top of the tank it shouldn't get too bad.
I never put anything from the freezer in the cage or next to the nest/house, if it's very hot I might put a freezer block on a shelf under the cage away from the house so they have a cool spot if they want it but they don't always like it & I don't want to force them out of the house if they don't.
You can put a mug in the fridge then put that in the cage, also tiles or some sand to go in the sand bath, that should be enough.

I have a terra cotta flower pot in my hamster's tank. She does go in it more when it's hot. I have put a cool block next to the side of the tank, but not near the nest.

Great ideas everyone, thanks! I might try each one and see what they both rather. I read a story of someone's ham dying from heatstroke and I got very worried, especially for my Syrian who's very very VERY active and long haired.

Sorry, didn't make myself clear:I put the ice block on the OUTSIDE of the bin, next to the nest. I would never put anything like that IN the cage - it can burn!

It's OK FA, I thought that's what you meant, I never imagined you would put it inside

It never hurts to have extra information to help others!Someone might know not to do something, but others may not,so having that bit of information is very important as it can be crucial in preventing a mistake.

Totally! That's why I always ask here first, even if the question seems silly I still ask.
