Winter White - Scent gland problem

Hello,

I have a winter white hamster and he is about to turn a year old. I noticed about two week ago, his scent gland was bigger than usual, but I read online that could be normal, So I left it alone. Now I noticed that the scent gland went down in size and I believe he has been picking at it, either by scratching or biting, I'm not entirely sure. I also have noticed that his penis has been swollen or bigger than usual. I just want to know if this is normal or do I have to take some action soon?

The scent glad can become infected and swollen in WW as it is so low on the ground. Adults do often have crusty secretions and staining and this is normal however swelling and a discharge is not. You can wipe with a damp cotton ball and see how it looks but an infection needs treatment with antibiotics and bathing to keep the infection draining away.
If you suspect it is infected then a vet visit is needed.

Good luck! I have a winter white male also, his scent gland always has some crust on it, but it never smelled or anything...so good luck with him

Thank you guys I don't really see any crust and smell anything, I just know that there was a lump there before and I guess he bit it and now its just flat lol
