Default Is this a scent gland or something else?

Yesterday I felt something on Marti's skin, like a pimple. After much struggle I was able to find a little black dot on her skin. My first guess is that it's her scent gland but I can't find the second one on the opposite side and I haven't felt it before.

I also feel like Marti has been scratching her sides more often than usual. But it may be just my paranoia.

Marti is a 4,5 months old female long haired Syrian hamster.

Thank you!

Looks to me like a mole! Definitely not a scent gland, they're large and round (sort of oily) and are symmetrical. They're also much more noticeable on males. To me it appears to look just like a mole, which is normal for a hamster to have. As always, if you're super worried, a vet visit never hurts

I agree, definitely not a scent gland, I have no idea how normal something like that might be though.

I agree, not a scent gland. I guess it wouldn't be surprising if hamsters had moles and things on their skin, just like us, but we usually wouldn't see them under their fur. If you're worried, you could take her to the vet. If she's eating and behaving normally she is likely fine. I think all hamsters scratch quite a bit, but you know Marti's habits better than we do.

Thank you all for the replies!
I guess I'll try and watch how it develops. If I feel like Marti acts differently or it changes somehow, I'll run to a vet. Thankfully, I have a couple clinics with rodents specialists in walking proximity. One of them also has a forum, maybe I'll see if someone knows something about it there.
Does anyone know whether it's possible for moles just to appear out of nowhere?

Not sure, sorry. I guess it may always have been there and you only just noticed? Sorry not to be much help. Perhaps you could ask Marti’s breeder?

Yes it's fairly normal, just as humans may develop a mole over time. It's especially common as they begin to age. Asking Marti's breeder as AP says, would be a good idea

AP, I don't think it was there before, I hold Marti every day, and I haven't felt it before. I don't know, though. Maybe I was somehow missing it. I think I will ask the breeder. Thank you!
Drago, she's only 4,5 months, is she aging already? I thought she was just growing up ))

It's more common, not exclusive, to aging hamsters. Obviously Marti isn't an elder quite yet I think it's a mole personally, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your breeder
