Default Vitacraft Vitasmart

Hi I have 2 dwarf hamsters. Is Vitacraft Vitasmart food mix a good food for them if I use it to mix in with the Higgens Sunburst food?

I personally wouldn't recommend vitacraft, nor would I recommend mixing it with another food. The problem with mixing foods is that both mixes have certain amounts of nutrients in them, and when two mixes are thrown together than the nutrients can be thrown off balance. This can make your hamsters ill.

What species of dwarfs do you have? If they are Campbells/winter white hybrids I would recommend feeding Burgess dwarf food from the U.K. because hybrids are prone to diabetes and some mixes are too high in sugar for them. If you don't live in the U.K. you can order it online.

I've asked a similar question about dwarf hamster food! I have a hybrid but I think a lot of hamsters are quite prone to diabetes. I've been using Vitakraft too and I was recommended Burgess Dwarf Mix. You can look up some reviews of it online and see for yourself! I've been told Vitakraft food is ok but not the best you can get. For dwarfs you could use Hazel/ Harry hamster food but you'd have to crush them into smaller pieces. I'm not exactly sure about Higgins or Sunburst tho as I don't have those in my country. If you're unsure you could always try feeding your hamster your own combination of food. Just watch out for things like carrots as they have sugar in them. You can check out ErinsAnimals on YouTube she has a video linking to a website that states food that your hamster can and cannot eat. Hope you find this information useful!

There are no dwarf appropriate foods in the US,at least for diabetes prone species.Carrots are fine by the way,and a DIY mix is not a good idea nor is just mixing food without being extremely cautious and really understanding nutrition.

Higgins, while a good choice for Syrians when combined with another high quality food for protein along with added animal protein,is just not a good choice for dwarf species.Burgess would be the only appropriate choice, and it certainly is worth the investment to have a high quality diet now rather than face the many issues that can come from a poor diet later on.

I would personally recommend Higgins Sunburst, and Harlan Teklad 8640. I can help you calculate the correct ratio to ensure whole nutrition.

I'm happy to help people figure out proper mixes based on what is available in the USA and Canada, as nutrition is something I'm quite interested in.

Keep in mind that while dwarfs may be diabetic prone, fruit and sugar will not inherently cause diabetes... everything in moderation. Diabetes, for the most part, is genetically linked, with only a small amount related to obesity.

Hekomi I give them the higgins with the Mazzuri mouse and rat blocks. Also I will like some help on the ratios bc I just mix them together with mealworms and add flaxseed and oats when I feed them. Thank you
