hamham gender?
I bought my ham ham from petco and the cage said female so the question is how correct are pet stores when it comes to gender.

Re: hamham gender?
Pet stores are quite reliable when it comes to gender but you could always check yourself if you don't trust them. Males have very obvious testicles at their rear end and a gland which looks like a dot somewhere in the middle of their bellies. Females have nipples which can be quite obvious unless your hamster has long fur or is just very fuzzy. If your hamster isn't tamed however, you can simply use some food or treats and lead it into a transparent container/jar and look at the bottom. This way, you won't have to handle your hamster since it doesn't fully trust you.

Re: hamham gender?
Pet stores are often incorrect about gender, but sometimes you get lucky.Of course, once your hamster is mature enough it should be fairly obvious,or if you just can't tell you could always upload a picture or several and someone should be able to help here

Re: hamham gender?
Usually, pet stores are correct. I've had 7 hamsters from a pet shop, and all were the gender I had been told that they were. It will soon become obvious if you do have a boy, because their balls will often be visible when they are warm or relaxed! Occasionally, pets shops can be wrong though. If you upload some photos of your ham's underparts I am sure someone can help you out.

Re: hamham gender?
I think it varies a lot from one pet shop to another tbh, I've never had a mistake made but some do so always best to check, as April said if you're not sure just post a photo here.

Re: hamham gender?
How do you get the proper photos when your ham ham refuses to sit still in a clear container or in your hand.

Re: hamham gender?
Could you maybe take a video of your ham in the container? To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about gender for now and would concentrate on taming instead. Just assume you have a girl for now, and when they are tame you will be much better able to check.
There's a 50% probability to begin with that any given hamster will be a girl. Then, if you have been told by a pet shop that this hamster is a girl, even if they could be wrong, that does increase the probability of it being female as someone has clearly had a look. So, it's more likely than not that she is female.

Re: hamham gender?
It can be tricky to take photos, patience pays off but I do agree with April about not really worrying about it for now, not sure how long you've had your ham but chances are you would know by now if it was a male as it's usually fairly obvious so the chances are you do have a female.

Re: hamham gender?
I personally find that hamsters in large chain stores tend to be correct 90% of the time. Smaller shops are more likely to be incorrect so you may run more of a risk there. In the end, I wouldn't worry too much over it. To be honest, I've still never properly sexed my robo and it doesn't quite matter to me in the end. What species is your little one?
