Question Searching for a good guide to spot cleaning

Hey people of hamster central
I'm searching for a guide to spot clean my hamster's cage. I'm thinking of litter training my hybrid or at least know how to keep my cage clean for longer periods of time so that I don't have to use so much bedding. The bedding I'm using is Critter care's natural paper bedding (same brand as Carefresh). The colour of the bedding is brown and since I don't know where my hamster goes to do his business I want to learn so that I can try to litter train him once I find some chinchilla sand. The brown doesn't really help me since the colour change is really mild and hamster faeces is tiny. Critter care has white paper bedding (it's called snowflake and it's a little bit pricier for some reason) and I'm wondering if the white colour could help me identify his toilet spots. I greatly appreciate the help all of you have given me!

First, don't worry about picking up the poop. It doesn't do any harm to the hamster (in fact, they eat certain types of their poop) and dries quickly. Just remove any obviously 'used' areas to keep things tidy.
Mainly you should look for pee stains. White would help (pee stains are yellow), but with brown substrate your best bet is to a) look/feel for wet patches, and/or b) smell for it. Main areas to look at are corners, in or around the house, and the wheel. Some also choose to pee in tubes. And...some just pee where ever they feel like.
Potty training is generally a good/helpful idea, but just be warned that the time it takes can vary. Some hamsters immediately use it, some take weeks/months, and some never use it (or only rarely).

As Jeir mentioned you don't need to worry about the poop. It doesn't smell or cause harm to your hamster if it's left in the cage for awhile. Also hamsters don't have very much control over where they poop so the poo probably won't end up in the potty. You'll probably find a lot of it where the hamster sleeps and where they spend most of their time.

It can be kind of hard to find pee spots. I've found that the best way is to wear disposable gloves if preffered and pick up chunks of bedding in different areas of the cage and sniff it. I know it sounds gross but it'll help you find the pee spot(s). A lot of hams will also pee in their wheels. One of my robos pees in his wheel a lot so I have to wipe it down with a damp cloth every few days. Some hamsters will pee in several places- my robo also does this. However, I've found that both of my robos pee in their burrow areas so I can just change out that section every couple of weeks. Good luck with potty training, I'm looking into it with one of my hams!
