Someone may well correct me on this, but I believe that it is fine to hoover your room while your hamster is in there. They do tend to get used to ordinary household noises and I think I have heard people on this forum saying that they have used hairdryers and hoovers in the same room as their hamster. Personally, I have always moved my hamster out before hoovering their room and I dry my hair in a different room. But, that is probably just me being neurotic. So long as you are not continuously playin loud music next to the cage, your hamster shold be fine.

Every hamster is quite different in their reactions. Some can handle occasional loud noises, others would need special precautions such as being moved out of a room in certain situations.Their natural instincts as prey animals need to be taken into account though, and their sense of hearing which would be stronger than a human's.I can say that I had a Syrian who was very fond of music in general, particularly Marilyn Manson, but that sort of hamster is not common and we must respect their needs as prey animals and come to some sort of compromise where nobody has to be put into a remotely harmful position

They do have an acute sense of hearing, so something that doesn't seem that loud to us will seem loud to them. But as the others say, they can get used to general household noises. So for example they may not be bothered by people talking and the TV on while out and about. But they would sense something scary - like if the TV was very loud or people were sounding angry. They do sense peoples' behaviour I think, which is why some rescue hamsters are nervous after not being treated kindly, or handled roughly.

I do think they sense your tone of voice, which is why people talk to them in a gentle tone through the cage at the start of taming. They get used to your voice and will sense whether it is kind or not.

I think the hoover can scare them - but it depends on the hamster and what they have got used to. As Newtie is still very young I don't use the hoover when he's in the cage - although I do have a brilliant old fashioned floorsweeper that picks up bits without making a noise! They are becoming popular again.

Like April Pearl I waited until he was in the other room during out of cage time (popped him in his pet carrier for 10 minutes or so) and hoovered the room he is in then.

With our last hamster I used to do it during the day when he was asleep but it would wake him up and make him a bit nervous. He did get used to it, but I tried not to do it too often when he was in the room.

Very loud noises like fireworks, will scare or startle most pets. Our hamster also likes the sound of some music - but I don't turn it up loud

You could try recording the sounds and playing it quietly, then gradually increasing the volume. I know it can work for other animals and birds.

It depends really, firstly on the hamster's tolerance and how well it is accustomed to the environment. Every hamster is different, some may get used to it quickly, some may take longer, and some might just have no tolerance. However I think how long your hamster has been there and how often the noises are made is also a factor. Obviously if it's a new hamster it's going to take some time to get used to but if it's a hamster that's been in your house for a while it should be quite ok. As Serendipity said, hamsters have a very good sense of hearing and loud noises may stress it if it's not used to them, but they will learn to deal with it after some time. Hope this helps!
