care for alopecia
My Syrain Ed is 2 years old, and I think he may have alopecia (he no looks like a big mouse), he will be going to the vets though it is not till Thursday.
Is there a certain care routine that they need, and is there any home remedies I can use if it is alopecia, as I like to be as nautral as I can with my little one's.
Any help/advise would be very appreciated.
(I will post a picture of him later, as he is fast asleep at the moment)

Re: care for alopecia
It's natural that they loss fur when they're old. Flaxseeds help to improve their hair condition, but they doesn't make miracles. I think that primrose oil also helps, but I'm not sure about this one. The best thing you can do is follow your vet advice.

Re: care for alopecia
Hamsterita is correct. Both flaxseed (sometimes called linseed in the uk) and a drop of primrose oil daily will help with fur loss. And hair loss does occur naturally in older hamsters. Your boy is very old so some baldness is probably just age related. As far as I know though, it is rare for them to go completely bald. You say that your boy looks like a big mouse, does he have no fur at all?

Re: care for alopecia
Is it generalised fur loss or just in specific places?
If it's been gradual then it may be due to age but they usually just have thinning fur rather than actually losing it all so without a photo it is hard to know if it's age related or not.
As the others have said take the advice of your vet but evening primrose oil & some flax seeds can really help with both skin & fur condition. You can also give some nutritional yeast (sold as a supplement for humans, either tablets or flakes) in addition.

Re: care for alopecia
Overdoing protein can also cause hair loss, but as can old age. A vet visit won't hurt, but you can supplement his diet with flaxseed and primrose oil.

Re: care for alopecia
I notice that you had started your own thread nanaliveshere so had replied to that before I seen this. It might be an idea to try and post your pic again on that thread so that people may be able to advise
