Default Itchy Dwarf hamster

Hi I'm looking for some advice...
I have two Russian dwarf hamsters and one of them has recently started to scratch his skin to the point he has now a large sore. I have been to the vets and the first sore has cleaned up but the second hasn't. I have now been given steroids for him, my concern is this isn't going to work because it didn't before. I am looking for any advice, wether it means getting his nails trimmed or any herbal remedies?

Any advice would be massively appreciated!
Thank you

Do you notice small reddish bugs moving through the fur/on the skin? Does he appear to have any flaky or crusty patches? Did the vet specify what exactly they thought was wrong? A photo might help us with advising remedies Hope he feels better soon

I also wondered if the vet had told you what might be causing the sores in the first place, it's very hard to guess tbh, it doesn't sound like a mite problem.
Are your pair still together? I'm just wondering about possible wounds from fights?
A photo might help give us a better idea of what's going on.
Herbal remedies aren't always safe for hams as they're so tiny so do be careful if you come across anything that suggest using herbs.
You can try adding a few extra flax seeds to the diet & give a tiny amount (really about half a drop a day on food) of evening primrose oil, these will help with general skin/coat condition so it's worth giving them a try.
You could also give some probiotics just to give him an overall boost which may help with his recovery if not the cause.
