Young hammy has blood in his Eye!
Hello all! It looks like our little Syrian, Freddie, has blood in his eye. It wasn't like this before, and he's only 3 months old. He's a very VERY active little chap. Always climbing and squeezing into little gaps being his little bed in his cage.
He had a good balanced diet and nothing he shouldn't have in his cage.
Could this be strain?
Help would be appreciated!
Hopefully the photo is clear.
Thank you all!

Re: Young hammy has blood in his Eye!
Hi there
Were the eyes always different shades of red? If one was dark and one pink always it may just be the pic however that said the eye does look slightly odd shape wise and it may be that he has injured it. I think I would advise a vet visit as it may need some drops to reduce inflammation and prevent and infection.
Odd eye colour is something that is seen in hamsters with a pattern so that in itself is not a problem but it sounds like you have noticed a change. Is there any discharge or bulging in the eye. They can easily damage the eye when climbing and falling so I would try and make sure he has deep soft substrate and no bowls etc he can drop on to or high shelves.

As Souffle says, if it has always been that colour there's no need to worry, some hamsters just have one red and one black eye. If not, I would take him to the vet.

Thank you for your reply!
If you have a good look in some good like the best way to describe it is like his eye has just filled with cloudy blood. They were both a very deep black up until yesterday so i assume it is an injury of some kind. Off to the vets then I reckon

Good luck at the vets. Please let us know how your hammy is doing whenever you have a chance. I do hope that Freddie has a complete and speedy recovery.
