Re: Thinning fur?
Thank you Cypher. I suspect you’re right. I just worry than there could be a pre existing condition causing it which he had when I got him... But I will keep an eye on it.

Re: Thinning fur?
He looks just fine to me for a long haired satin. At this age he is moulting out his baby coat and the proper adult coat will be developing. You may find it darkens and gets longer at the back. I wouldn't give oils or anything just now. Maintain a good diet. Mine are currently having weetabix soaked in water and a little milk as the B vitamins are good for the coats. Young hamsters can be given daily extras like thins till about 6 months.

Re: Thinning fur?
Thank you Souffle. That is very comforting to hear. I had been giving Mushu rolled oats with milk as the hamsterlopaedia reccommends it, but I read hear that dairy was bad for hamsters so I stopped. Is dairy only bad for older hamsters then? Or is this a point of argument? I keep seeing conflicting opinions about milk!

Re: Thinning fur?
Some hamsters are lactose intolerant but in my experience they are few and far between.
I will always try mine with something with a drop of milk in it to see how they respond as I feel milk is a valuable addition especially for young animals. If they are OK I might then offer yogurt or cheese and if they are OK with that I am sure they are not lactose intolerant and will feed them small amounts of dairy. None of the 20 hamsters we have currently have any issues and all get milky treats on occasion. It sounds like your boy is OK if he has already been fine with milk. I would soak my weetabix in water with about 2 teaspoons of milk added till mushy!

Re: Thinning fur?
Thanks! Mushu had already had both milk with oats and cheese before I read about milk being possibly bad and he didn’t seem to show any ill effects. I realise cheese is not the best thing to feed them, but I am glad that I can resume feeding the oats with milk. So a bit of milk daily until he is 6 months old then?

Re: Thinning fur?
If you like you can give him about a teaspoon daily then maybe a couple of times a week after 6 months. Alternatives we would give are non sugary breakfast cereals like rice crispies, cheerios, weetabix, ready brek but just a teaspoon out your breakfast bowl! If they are used to veg then a fingernail sized piece daily is fine. You don't want them storing wet food so that is why you only feed small amounts. The main food should always be the seed mix

Re: Thinning fur?
Thank you! That sounds great I only ever give small amounts of fresh food for that reason, and check his store after.
