Default HELP! Hamtser Puking face!

Hi guys, please advice me on this. I recently bought 2 syrian hamsters, female(bambi) and male( willy).
These two hamsters are with me for almost 2 weeks now.. and few days ago Bambi had a flu, at first she was only sneezing.. So today, i changed their bedding and added a sand bath. I tried putting willy on their sand bath and he loved it! He kept on digging n digging, so i figured that bambi would love em too. I put her there and she sniffed it for 1 second and headed out. After that, Bambi sneezed ALOT! She even squeaked as if something she experienced something painful.
Oh! Before that, she ate her favourite(sunflower seed), not as much as she used to.. then, she made this face... its like something stucked in her mouth? I thought she was yawning but ive seen her yawned and its not like that.. its more like "i-wanna-puke" face. She did that around 6 times and stopped then she squeaked again. She kept on rubbing her nose and sneezed..i think her nose is a bit swollen..

Now she is resting.. i really really dont wanna lose her guys, i want her to get better.. so please please pleaseeee help.

Hi Kath, welcome to HC. While she could be reacting to dust in the cage, Respiratory problems can be serious hamsters so I would suggest taking Bambi to the vet as soon as you can.
But also I would strongly advise separating your hamsters straight away. Aside from the fact that Syrian hamsters are solitary in the wild & do not get along with other hamsters, they are also prolific breeders so housing a male and female together could lead to you being over-run with babies. Which isn't good for you or tour hamsters. I would suggest putting your female on pregnancy watch. There are some threads about this in the breeding section is the forum and I'm sure one of the breeders will give you could advice too. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to hamster central

This "puking face" you're describing is likely just her emptying her cheek pouches. Hamsters do this once they've transported their food to their caches. However, like Velma has mentioned, a respiratory infection could be a real possibility. Especially with a swollen/runny nose and sneezing. I would recommend you book her a vet appointment soon so she can be checked out. Respiratory infections kill in small rodents

It's crucial that Bambi and Willy are separated immediately. They will fight and kill one another soon, but before that, they will breed and you could end up with 6+ more Syrians! Then the vicious cycle begins, and many novice owners become trapped. Often, being inexperienced, they're unable to properly sex the pups and thus, siblings breed causing the population to grow exponentially. This leaves you with severely inbred and unhealthy pups! Besides the mess of hamsters you can soon find yourself surrounded by, birthing is tough on mothers, and sometimes things go wrong, and you'll end up spending hundreds to help her. There's a VERY good chance she is pregnant so be prepared for pups and pregnancy. I would seek the advice of an experienced breeder for helping condition a mother for birth, and for tips on pups. Best wishes

Hi! Some good advice already , so I'll try not to over-repeat anything.
Remove the two immediately from each other. Being a female and a male, Bambi might become pregnant. Even if somehow they were improperly sexed (happens a lot!) and are both the same gender, Syrians only tolerate contact between each other in the wild for reproductive purposes.
Did you manage to get a photo of the "puking face?" Photos would be really helpful in a situation like this.

This sneezing and runny nose and acting strangely did it start once you changed the bedding and put in sand for the first time? What type of bedding are you using? And what sand are you using? For sand you need to make sure that it is chinchilla sand and not dust as this is bad for their respiratory system. THere is also a possibility something has got lodged in her cheek pouch perhaps. Either way you need to do two things that have already been mentioned:
Separate your 2 Syrians which never should be kept together and take her to the vet ASAP. Let us know how it goes.
