Unsure of cause of death
Hey guys!
Unfortunately, i've joined this community for sad reasons. We got a pair of campbell dwarf hamsters a few weeks ago and one of them has died. However, i'm not sure if they were killed by the other campbell.
So long story short, i found her lying on her side in the house they both slept in. She had blood over her face and neck.
However, the other campbell has no blood anywhere, not even a scratch, and they haven't fought each other at all before. I've heard they can try to eat their dead to avoid attracting predators? They slept next to each other regularly, never chased each other, or blocked each other, or acted in any way aggressive to each other. Both were female and raised together by petsathome.
What are your thoughts? I want a pair that get on, but don't want to introduce the still-living campbell to a newcomer if she's getting murderous.

Re: Unsure of cause of death
So sorry to hear about your hammy.
The ham that's left can't be put with another as this would cause problems. You can only keep pairs if they've been together since birth. If you decide on getting another then you would need another cage.

I'm so sorry Critchley94, it must have been very upsetting for you to find your little one like that.
It's really not possible to know if they had a sudden falling out or if something else happened.
As Lizzy said you can't introduce another ham to the one you still have, that would almost definitely lead to fights.
Your ham will be happy living alone & doesn't need company.

Re: Unsure of cause of death
So sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a pet at the best of times, let alone finding them in such a distressing state.
Hmm the surviving Campbell could have cleaned the blood off herself, so I wouldn't take not catching her red-pawed so to speak as proof of her innocence.
Regardless, it would be inadvisable to put her with another hamster, as the others have said, even if she did not kill her sister, because they would not have been raised together,

Re: Unsure of cause of death
Thanks for the kind words, guys, and for the solid advice. It's frustrating not to know what happened, but I think I'll just be extra careful with any future pairs.
A happy update is that I got another Campbell with its own cage, and the little thing is adorably docile and very friendly. We named her Raichu II, after the first one. Both seem happy, so that's good.

Sorry for the loss of your other hamster
Lovely to hear about Raichu II! Why not share some pictures of the cute little critter once she's settled a bit!
