Re: Odor-Female Hamster
Thank you very much, Serendipity, Cypher, Jeir, Amityville & Drago for your responses. I really appreciate it. The one suggestion I implemented immediately was placing a box of baking soda in the room. (Thanks, Drago!) I also checked online for air purifiers and pet odor remover products. I will definitely avoid products that require direct contact with the hamster. So many great suggestions and comments. Thank you!
Next time, I'll choose a male, but hopefully I'll have this little one for her full lifespan. I still can't believe how tame she is and immediately after bringing her home, too!

Re: Odor-Female Hamster
I first noticed Khalis....smell about 2 weeks ago. I posted a thread on here thinking the awful smell was coming from the wheel. Thanks to the advice on here, I learnt that she will smell like burnt plastic every 4 days haha. Lucky me. She has been in heat twice since then and is just about to hit her 3rd ( the give away signs being she is rubbing against everything and being a loon). Its never been as bad of a smell as that first time, maybe because now i actually know what it is and where its coming from. I will certainly invest in one of those pet safe things just in case the smell gets bad again

I can't remember if male Syrians smell but my 3 male Russians only really smell strongly when they need cleaning out

Re: Odor-Female Hamster
Mine doesn't smell as pleasant as burnt plastic...l'd definitely use a different description but I'm sure they have unique odors and don't all smell the same. There are great suggestions here, Jennie. The only one I could implement immediately-a box of baking soda in the room-seems to be helping. YAY!!!!!!!!

Re: Odor-Female Hamster
My experience is only with Syrians.
Personally, I find that females have a funky smell when in heat. I try to clean the potty more frequently. But other than the potty and handling during this time, I don't find it unbearable.
However, male hammies are different. I find that they have this dark musky smell ALL the time. Kilian's bedding always has this scent all over it. He doesn't scent mark through pee, but it still is a very strong smell.
Between females and males, I actually think males have a stinkier scent, but this is just me.
*No offense Kili! Mum still loves you! LOL!*

Alpaca, thanks for your response. Another vote in favour of male hamsters next time!
Ladyntramp, that's great to know. Thanks for your response!
Alpaca, is that a winter white hamster in your signature? All three are adorable, but the white one looks exactly like my first dwarf hamster.

Re: Odor-Female Hamster
I switched my girl to Megazorb recently and I can't believe its scent-covering qualities, it is AMAZING. Even though she was cleaned out daily, previously you could *really* smell which corner of the cage she peed in, and every 4 days she got kinda stinky due to being in heat. Now it's like the Megazorb just magically masks it. I never smell her pee anymore, and when I take her out of the cage for cuddles I barely get a whiff of her in-heat fragrance. I don't know how easy it is to get outside the UK, but if you can get it I recommend it.

Thank you, Missy Crane. I didn't find Megazorb, but a store owner said he would try to order it. Drago's suggestion to put baking soda in the room has made a HUGE difference. Now I only notice the odor when Chloe is in my hands instead of smelling her throughout the entire apartment.

Glad to hear it's working for you I always have a box or two sitting around, make sure to replace it after a while though so that it always stays fresh. Back when I still owned females, to me, adding Timothy hay I found made the whole cage smell better. Make sure you just take the softest and smallest pieces! Hay also adds the benefit of helping hold tunnels

Re: Odor-Female Hamster
I would avoid hay.It isn't worth the risk, and there are other safe materials that help hold tunnels without the use of a less digestible material which would also have the potential for adding too much fiber to the diet(the fiber requirement is quite minimal for hamsters).
I found that a paper substrate combined with Carefresh crinkles(marketed as a nesting material but doesn't work for nesting)works just fine for burrowing,as the extra crinkles do help the substrate keep its shape more even though paper substrate generally holds burrows just fine. However,I could see aspen or other wood holding poorly without the addition of other materials, but wood as a substrate is a poor choice to begin with for many reasons.
