Flaps of skin
Hi,
My hamster Ella seems to have flaps of skin on the side of her body that I've never seen on any of my or my sister's 9 other Syrians. Is this normal and I've just never noticed it before, or could there be something wrong?

Re: Flaps of skin
Could you get a picture? Does she appear overweight at all? If you can get a picture or a few, it would help a lot!

She doesn't seem overweight. Her last weigh was 125g, and she seems slightly heavier but definitely doesn't look overweight (and as if to prove my point she's currently running on her wheel). I'll try and get a picture if she'll stay still.

Re: Flaps of skin
You can't see it at the moment when she's just standing (although I did notice it at first as you could), but you can see to in the other photo. It's literally just loose skin, but I've only had her a couple of months and she's gained weight at a healthy rate and hasn't got overweight from what I can see. It may just be normal for hamsters to have loose skin but I just wanted to make sure it's nothing serious.

Re: Flaps of skin
If they're symmetrical and she overall seems healthy, then I wouldn't worry about it. Some hamsters have a bit more fat on them than others do, and other environmental conditions can contribute to it i.e. omce being overweight then returning to a healthy weight. All in all if you think she seems alright, then I would not worry

Yeah, they are symmetrical and she does seem healthy otherwise. I won't worry then. Thanks for your help.

Re: Flaps of skin
That looks as though it could possibly be her pouches which extend right down to the hip, they don't normally appear as loose as that though.

Re: Flaps of skin
Following on from that, does she pouch food ok? Our Syrian always felt a bit like fur and bone at the sides, even when a healthy weight. Maybe it's meant to be a bit loose at the sides so their pouches can expand. Unless you've noticed it looking different.

Re: Flaps of skin
She looks OK to me - I quite often see that in show hamsters particularly females who have had litters or youngsters who have had a growth spurt then slowed down again. She will likely fill out a bit again as she matures. Make sure her water bottle is working properly as loose skin can be a sign of dehydration. She looks perky enough there

Re: Flaps of skin
She pouches food absolutely fine. It could be her pouches, although I wasn't aware they extended quite that far! Her water bottle is also working and she drinks quite a lot. She did have a fairly recent growth spurt, so she may fill out. As long as she's OK that's all that matters to me.
