Re: Flaps of skin
They certainly do! Have a look at this (video of x-ray showing hamster stuffing pouches from BBC programme).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X8In96zV9Q
The video that follows it is good too! Same TV series "Ninja Hamster" and the "Toilet Paper thief" one is really good. By the way the hamster ball theory in the Ninja Hamster video is debatable. Most hamsters wouldn't stop at the top of the stairs and would roll down which is dangerous, so don't think anyone should rely on a Hamster sensing how far down the stairs go!

Re: Flaps of skin
Update:
Ella seems to have little black scabs on her skin (not sure what they are), so I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow. Hopefully it's nothing too bad.

Ah, yes. I've seen that and I now remember. Their pouches are pretty incredible!

Re: Flaps of skin
Where are the black scabs on Ella's skin? If they are on her hips they might be her scent glands
If they are like this? Syrian Scent Glands

No, they're all over and they're tiny little things, and you can feel them if you stroke her. They're definitely not scent glands and probably shouldn't be there.

Re: Flaps of skin
Oh dear. Sorry to hear that. I hope it's nothing serious and the vet sorts it for you.

Re: Flaps of skin
That does sound a bit worrying, good luck at the vets, I hope it's something that can be easily resolved.
