Exclamation How can I reduce the stress of a robo hamster?

Hey, to anyone who's found my thread! Please Read my whole thread!

Here's my problem. If you've checked out my profile you will be aware that I only have one hamster. He is roborovski hamster and I have had him for around eight months. In the past I have had two Syrian hamsters and they liked me a lot until they passed away. But I feel as if with my new hamster he has become really stressed.

His names Jasper and I have noticed that I can't pick him up without him running away. He poops a lot when I hold him and cleans himself also meaning that he is trying to calm himself down. Likewise, I have noticed that he has a bold patch with a bump on the side of his face which is worrying! I took him to the vet however it will cost £120 to but him under anaesthetic and take a look at him and £200+ if there is something stuck in his check.

Family members and friends have told me it's best to see what happens, but it's just too expensive for an £11.99 hamster. I love him dearly but I'm unsure what to do.

He also likes too dig and try's to claw out of his cage. It's a fish tank I bought for half price and added mesh at the top. He has many toys inside the cage like his wheel, running disk and a second floor! So I'm unsure what to do really... Has anyone got any advice, to reduce the stress of hamsters? Also, what your opinion on what I should do about the bump on the side of his face?

I would really appreciate someone writing back to me!
Thanks very much, Katie_Ann xx

If he needs medical treatment it would be unfair for him not give it to him because the treatment is expensive and he wasn't. Maybe you could try to find a vet that would check him for a more reasonable fee. Making and appointment usually is cheaper than an emergency visit, and maybe he could try to check him without anaesthetic.

He looks really sweet, but in that photo we can't see the bump. Maybe If you could post another one other users could give you an idea of what's happening. Maybe he has an abcess or it could be a tumour.

To reduce the stress you could try to put more things in his cage (hideouts, toilet rolls, bendy bridges, more substrate to burrow...) and maybe he needs a bigger cage. I don't know the measures of his cage, but even if they're tiny they usually need big cages also (70x40, 80x50....)

Robos are very different to syrians & some never really become all that hand tame, if he doesn't want to be handled or it makes him too nervous I would treat him more as a pet to watch rather than hold, most will be quite happy to climb into a jar or something so you can still do health checks without having to stress them out, other than that just enjoy watching & talking to him.
They do tend to love digging, he may just be doing that & not actually trying to claw his way out of his cage at all.
Make sure he has as much substrate as you can get in for him to really enjoy digging & plenty of nice hideouts for him if he feels stressed.

Have you spoken to the vet about him? He may not need an anaesthetic but whether he does or not you really do need to take him in for a check, once you have a diagnosis then you can discuss the options with the vet & you can always come back here if you have more questions after that.

I would check out other vets in your area, where are you in the UK?
There's a thread on here regarding vets in the uk. It suggests ones to try.
