Unhappy blood in bedding! help

Hi,
I went to spot clean my hamster's cage and found blood in her bedding. I checked her and she seems fine. No visable injuries. Plus she is eating a d grooming herself and using her wheel.
But i am very concerned and not sure where it is coming from.
She is a syrian female hamster around 4 months old.
Any help would be great to put me at ease.
Thanks

Hi Mariamkyrillos, having looked at the picture you uploaded it does look like there's blood in her bedding to me too. I'd get her to the vet as soon as possible even if you can't see any sign of injury as female hamsters can get an illness of the womb called pyometra, I think it's caused by bleeding in the womb that is then found on bedding etc. Most hamsters will do their best to hide any injury or illness too since they're prey animals in the wild and will hide any sign of weakness so they won't get killed by a predator. I'm not trying to worry you but I always go to the vet if I'm in doubt and it's always done me well.

It might be simply that she's caught a nail while playing or something equally as simple but I would get her to the vet just to check. Pyometra is an illness that lasts the whole life of the animal that has it, I'm sure some anti-biotics can help with the symptoms but it can't be permanently cured. I'm not sure if a hamster as young as yours can get this illness as I have no experience of it myself. I hope it's something simple and your little one will be well again soon.

Edit: I've had a bit more of a think about it and it could be possible that your little one has a bladder infection and is passing blood like that. I've had a ham with one before and they were acting normally for the most part apart from trying to urinate more than usual without passing much urine and when they did pass some there was a bit of blood in it. Completely curable with a course of anti-biotics.

Also I wondered if you gave your little one any fresh red food that she could have taken back to her bed? I think it's a bit of a long shot but I've fed a tiny bit of carrot to them before and noticed an orange stain in the bedding wondering what could have possibly caused it! I've also had dye run off their wooden chews so if she has anything red in her cage it could be that.

My first thought would be a urinary infection, as Goldie flower says pyo is something to consider but if she doesn't appear unwell or isn't showing other symptoms at the moment I would think a urinary infection is more likely, if that is what it is it can be easily treated with antibiotics so the sooner you can get her to the vet the better really.

She needs to see a vet, the sooner the better so she can be treated.

Is it definitely blood? I know sometimes they can pee on food and it stains things. Have you checked her over for any injuries? Also what wheel does she have? Sometimes with the wood wheels hamsters have had splinters in their feet that bled (although then it might be on the wheel as well).

If it is blood, as the others say, it could be a urinary infection and she would need to see a vet.

A UTI seems likely based on the colour. It's a good idea to have your little one checked out. UTIs are easily treated with antibiotics, and a vet will be able to help you x

I echo what the others have said about the vet. Don't panic yet, it might be nothing, but if it's something the vet will know and be able to help When my girl had blood in her bedding, the vet noted that she also had pus around her 'lady parts' which I hadn't been able to see, personally. They are trained to be the experts!

The good news is your hammy is young so if she needs any kind of treatment the prognosis is better than if she was a more elderly ham. Good luck x

Hi guys just a quick update about my hamster. The doctor was unable to see anything suspicious and recommended to go with antibiotics just in case it is an infection in her womb. So far we are good, nothing has changed but we are still on the course. She has been bonding so well with me, suddenly she is wanting me to pick her up and sits on my arm to cuddle in my robe. She is so lovely and gentle. I just hope these antibiotics work.
Thanks to all your replies Xx

You need to use probiotics whenever you're using antibiotics, otherwise the immune system will be overwhelmed and it could result in an unhealthy hamster If it is a womb infection(pyometra)then antibiotics alone aren't going to be a permanent fix. That would require surgery(spaying to be exact),and the antibiotics would only work temporarily but it will come back.

It is strange that a vet would give medicine without being certain that there is an infection, considering how harsh medicine is on the body especially where small pets are concerned.

As Amity says the antibiotics won't cure pyo but it does sound as though it's more likely to be a UTI so fingers crossed the meds will do the trick & she'll be fine.
I always give probiotics during & after antibiotics (not at the same time as the meds, a few hours apart is best) you can get them online or from P@H or other pet shops, most people use this one.
Good to hear she's bonding so well with you now.
