Glad she is close to you and on the antibiotics. Maybe it could be worth thinking about seeing if there is an exotic vet in the area that is more specialised with hamsters, for another opinion. Then you can know for sure whether it is pyo or not - I think there are tests they can do. Your first vet won't mind, they're used to people going for second opinions and most vets aren't specialised in hamster matters. What area are you in?

Just to add to what AmityvilleHams said - if you find a low fat yoghurt, it's a great idea to feed her just a tiny amount every day, perhaps on the tip of your finger, whilst she's on the antiobiotics, as yoghurt has wonderful probiotic qualities. Since you're bonding so well it's nice to feed her by hand, as the sensation of a hammy licking your finger is quite adorable! :P Just be careful not to give too much as it could upset her tummy.

So glad everything seems to be going well for you guys I hope it is just a UTI and the anti-biotics will do the trick! I think the pro-biotics or yoghurt are a good idea too, it just give a bit of an extra boost while she's on her medication. I would consider trying to find a specialist vet in future too, they're so much better than a general vet who usually deals with bigger animals. So glad to hear that you and your ham are bonding really well and I hope things keep going this well for you both

I was advised here to give probiotic powder to Archie when he had a bad infection and it really helped. I put a sprinkle in his baby food everyday.
He was older so his infection lasted longer and he was on antibiotics for 6 weeks. So I gave him various baby foods, scrambled egg, mashed veg.

I would feed plain probiotics regularly, but not any sort of dairy product.Unfortunately with hamsters the dairy on a frequent basis would mess with the whole goal of probiotics(keeping beneficial bacteria in check along with the benefits probiotics have on gut health)while hamsters don't digest dairy well(therefore impacting the total effect probiotics would otherwise have on them).

Have you fed her strawberries? Strawberry's can leave a red mark that looks like blood. Even still, take her to the vet.

Exclamation Help

Hi guys, so Jozie improved for a couple of days but the spotting of blood has appeared again in her bedding. I am waiting to see the vet as they are fully booked. However I have taken her out to have some play time in my room and I gave her a quick check and I am very worried because I think she might be starting to have wet tail. Help me please I don't know what to do. Have a look at the photos and let me know what you think. Also if she has wet tail is it contagious to humans in any form? I have a small child and he likes to feed her and handle her. Should we stop handling her until we see the vet.
I appreciate any advice and help you have thank you all.

I'm so sorry to hear that Jozie isn't completely better yet. I'm not sure if wet tail can pass to humans or not but I know someone else here will have the answer to that part for you!

Can you see solid waste in her cage? If there's solid waste then having wet tail doesn't seem too likely, personally I'd treat her as though she has until I was completely certain. Make sure you and anyone else that handles her is washing hands thoroughly before and after handling her (I know that's really obvious but it still seems worth mentioning), if Jozie is still on any 'wet' food like fruit or high water content veg (like cucumber) I'd take her off it immediately and feed her only 'dry' food like her regular food mix. Keep an eye out for wet droppings and keep an eye on her until you can see the vet again.

I'd possibly try and see if there's a different vet you could see faster than your regular one if they're really booked up. I think most, if not all, vets have an emergency service so don't hesitate to call them back if you think her life is in danger.

From the pictures I can't see any waste around her back end so I'm not sure if it's wet tail or not. It's more common in new baby animals struggling to settle in (but it can occur later in life), I've had a female ham before and she sometimes got a little 'wet' on her undercarriage when she was in heat. It could simply be this. Let us know how you get on at the vet xx

I can't see anything from the photos either, as far as I know wet tail doesn't transmit to humans & I think if it was wet tail you would have a very sick ham by now.
I agree it would be good to either try for an emergency appointment with your vet or look for another who can fit you in sooner if you are really worried about her.
Looking at photos here & trying to guess is no replacement for a good check by an experienced vet.

I would try and get an emergency appointment, it might cost extra but, bleeding is serious.
