Black spots on skin??
I recently noticed that my hamster has suddenly gotten a black patch on his skin. I touched it and it didn't seem to bother him at all but the area seems to now be having hair loss and they are not his scent glands. I'm really worried and would really like to know what is this....?

Re: Black spots on skin??
It looks like a scab? Is there a scab on the area at all or is it pigment? It looks like when the fur gets stuck round the wheel spindle and ripped out or is rubbing on the wheel and it gets sore. Check there is no fur in the wheel spindle and that his back is not touching as he runs. Long hairs can get static and the hair stands up and catches sometimes.
If it is pigment and seems raised I would have it checked by a vet.

I checked if I could find any fur anywhere but I couldn't. It doesn't seem like a scab but more like pigment. When I touch it he doesn't seem bothered at all. I will take him to the vet but I need to have some idea of what exactly this is and it's cause because I live in India and sadly the vets don't have much knowledge on hamsters here and sometimes give the wrong medication which has happened to me twice but luckily I had some knowledge on some past issues and therefore I ended up treating him on my own.
For this case I have no idea so I won't be able to tell if my vet is on the right track. I don't want to give him some wrong medication

Re: Black spots on skin??
It may just be a contrast between the white band and the couloured area, The skin under the coloured area looks like it will be a dark colour where as the white areas will have pink skin. Is the patch under coloured fur?

Re: Black spots on skin??
black skin patches and hair loss can be a sign of Cushings disease. It's best to get a vet diagnosis however if you don't have much confidence in your vet then I can only suggest looking for a small animal specialist. There are some stickied items on Cushings at the top of the healthcare section you may like to check out. Maybe monitor for a few days and see how he does. I'd take the wheel away just to see if it does go when you do this. Give him lots of chew toys and tubes and plenty playtime with you.

Did you find out what this was? My hamster has similar marks on his head however without the hair loss? As with you I have struggled to find vets with much knowledge of hamsters.
