Exclamation Dry Flakey Skin on Hybrid Hamster

My hybrid Stephano has a patch of dry skin on his back (near his neck? do hamsters have necks?). It seemed to go away after I switched their bedding to fitch but it's just come back again It doesn't seem to bother him and there's no blood which is good but I think I need to make a vets appointment as soon as possible still.

Do you have any suggestions of what could be causing it or how to help him?

Also his cagemate is fine so I doubt it's mites.

do you have any sand pits in your enclosure? My one ham Duncan went through something similar to this, but it eventually cleared itself up. Like humans, I believe hamsters probably get dry skin, especially since it's the winter season. As long as there's no irritation, he'll be okay

It doesn't sound anything like mites so I don't think you need worry about that.
Is there anything in the cage he could be rubbing against? that can sometimes cause patches like that.
You could try giving a few extra flax seeds which are really good for skin & fur, if that doesn't do it a tiny bit of evening primrose oil can help, only a tiny bit, no more than half a drop a day so I mix it in with oats & just give a little of the mix when they need it.

I couldn't find any products for his skin (everything contained tea tree) so I've made him a vet appointment for Monday. hopefully everything will be alright...

I'm going to pick up some flax seed tomorow but there's no evening primrose oil anywhere where I live, just the tablet versions

Maybe plain coconut oil with no additives etc? You'd have to go extremely light because it probably is sugary, but if you can find another oil and maybe just rub that once a week it should be fine. There are probably some other oils out there that are hamster-safe,but currently I can't think of any

I wouldn't apply anything to the skin.
If you mean you can only get EPO in capsule form that's not a problem, just pierce a hole in a capsule & squeeze the oil out.
Did you check everything in the cage to make sure he's not rubbing that area against something?

I'll try piercing the capsules then, thank you.

I removed his sand bath in case that was irritating his dry skin but he hasn't been rubbing against anything that could cause or irritate it. Hopefully the vets will know what's wrong, I hate seeing him all sore and itchy like this
