I'm really glad to hear about this positive vet, your regular one sounded so uncaring. I've also had hamsters with pyometra, Yummy being the most recent and she was spayed before she hit a year old.

I really hope the treatment works and it cures the pyo, as this information can be used and passed on to other vets to cure it. If it works there won't be need for invasive surgery specially for small animals like our hamsters.

Thank you so, so much everyone.

I'm so happy to be able to report back with positive news!

It is now over 3 weeks since Esme had her last shot, and her symptoms have completely disappeared for the same amount of time. She is a healthy, happy, hyper ham, and there is no more blood or pus to be found, so the vets say (and I agree) that her infection is in full remission I sincerely hope it stays this way, haha! She's 2 this May, and I can't wait to celebrate her birthday.

I'm so excited that this treatment is now available to hams and seems to be so effective, as it is non-invasive and relatively stress-free (out of 4 shots, Esme only wriggled through one of them!). God bless this second surgery for giving my girl a chance when the first turned us away...I'm so grateful to that forward-thinking small animal specialist!

My biggest takeaway from this has been always, always get a second opinion if you feel in your heart that you are not getting 100% the best care for your animal! You never know - your last chance might become your future first choice *thumbs up*

Awwww....she looks exactly like my last black tort! Just curious what exactly was the injections the vet was giving?

Thank you, Drago! Her colouring is what made me choose her...the little stripe down her face was identical to my cat I guess I have a thing for torties, haha! My local Pets at Home has combined with the RSPCA to offer an adoption centre for rodents, and I found Esme there. You can bring home a dear little friend who needs a second chance, for a small donation. Apparently she was the last of her litter and she had been through 3 pet shops without finding a home, so at 7 months old she ended up there. It will forever be a mystery to me why nobody wanted her - not only is she gorgeous, she's one of the tamest, friendliest hams I ever met! But I guess it's their loss, my gain

BCJetta - aw, torties are the best! I never even knew hammies could come in this colour till Esme, haha. The injections were called Alizin. I think I will dig in my purse and find Esme's receipt and write down details in the pyometra info thread, hopefully it might be helpful to someone

@cypher - thank you! She's still going strong!!
