Default Nutmeg's Treatment for Leg

Hello all,

So I thought I would create this thread to keep everyone informed on how Nutmeg's treatment is going for her leg injury. To follow up on her leg injury read my previous thread:

Urgent Leg Injury!!

Day 2 of Metacam

Disaster has struck!

Tried Nutmeg with cucumber and the Metacam, she liked most of the Metacam off and then discarded the cucumber! At least she got some of her medicine in.

However when the cucumber wasn't working I resorted to using a flaked pea from her mix, this is where everything went wrong! She liked off the Metacam and then whilst I was trying her on the flaked pea I think I accidently jabbed her in the eye! I was panicking! I don't think there was any Metacam on it given that her eye was squinted for about a minute and then she had it back to her normal size, if it was Metacam she would be squeaking I suppose given the pain, there are no scratches or anything on it either. Her eye now seems to be good and she isn't squinting it. Thoughts? Do I need to wash the eye out and if so how??? She was cleaning a lot around her face before the eye incident so perhaps some Metacam got in her eye but both now seem fine and once I put her back in her cage it did look like the water in her eye had got rid of the Metacam, if there was any that or it was the Metacam.

I feel so bad about this! I am going to ring the vets tomorrow and ask if there is anything I can put in her water instead of her food. Or does anybody know of any food that Hamsters love- mind she is a Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster so is prone to diabetes.

An update on her leg: Her leg is looking better, the bruising is still there and the swelling has reduced. Her skin looks thin still. Bless her she is missing her wheel Can't have it for a few weeks though, Vets orders.

Thank you,

Gimleyand Meeko

Mix the medicine into plain chicken baby food. This is far more effective than putting medication in water, since you'd really not have any idea how much of the medication would be taken in compared to any amount lost by leakage, evaporation of the water if possible, etc.Plus, putting medication in water can cause the water to taste bad to your hamster which could mean opening up a chance for dehydration

Ok will try the baby food! Thank you! She has had it on cucumber and watermelon so far so will defiantly try the baby food! What do you think about the eye?

I agree with amity, baby food is good and soft for her. Avoid giving her things in her water, she'll avoid drinking it and this can cause a whole host of other problems. Her eye will most likely be just fine, these little guys poke their eyes on things in their cage all the time, but they usually heal up alright. It's good to hear though that her leg is getting better!

Ok, going with Porridge and Baby Food for the next few days and am going to see what she thinks Just read through the instructions for the Metacam again and it doesn't mention anything about it going in her eye. I am worried but I will monitor her for the next few days, although it does look like it has healed up nicely (her eye) given she isn't squinting

Will do, I will monitor her for the next few days and if any signs of redness, discharge or irritation/ swelling appear then another vet trip will be needed.

It's difficult isn't it. I've put Charlie off a couple of his favourites (like porridge) by adding things to it. Chicken baby food sounds good as it's quite a strong and tempting smell.

It's so easy to have these little slips. I'm sure she will be ok - there wouldn't have been much metacam (if any) on the end of the syringe and she'd have squealed if it had been painful. You do feel terrible though - I caught Charlie's nose on the cage when I was lifting him out and felt really bad because he's such a little old ham. He didn't seem to react though, just looked a bit surprised. Just keep an eye on it - they are very good at cleaning themselves. If it starts to get sticky (ie eyelids sticky) then just bathe it with a bit of salt water (only about a teaspoon of salt to a pint of boiled water - then when the salt's dissolved add another pint to cool it down until it's only just warm (tepid). Using something like a piece of sterile gauze out of a first aid kit might be good - just dip the corner in and drip little bits onto her eye area so she doesn't get soaked. If necessary

Bless, they do look surprised don't they, her dye looked better this morning and actually shinier than the other! Will keep an eye on her for the next few days of course though and of she does show any signs of pain I will bathe it per the instruction you have so kindly set Thank you

Day 3 of Metacam

Hello! Sorry this was meant to be posted yesterday. So Nutmeg took the cucumber and ate it overnight! Lovely she says! She had broccoli yesterday and was loving and then went yuck! she has eaten most of it though. I bout her the baby food and she has rice pudding baby food this evening so I will how that fairs, also can they have squash? Her leg looks so much better too! No more incidents either! I will report about the rice pudding too. She is gaining weight too, which is great
