Bambs is making weird noises.
Hello everyone, how are y'all doing?
Recently Bambi has been making some weird huffing / sneezing noises kinda like the ones Miranda used to make and at first I wasn't that concerned because he's eating and acting fine but he's staring to make these noises a lot more frequently now. At first I thought it could be the bedding so tomorrow I'm going to get some Carefresh and hopefully that should help.
He only usually makes these noises when he first wakes up but he's started to do it when he's pouching his food. His pouches always look full and now we're worried about it something being wrong with them. After he makes this noise he always rubs his face but he doesn't look like he's hurt so we're all just really confused.
Like I said, Miranda made these noises all the time and she was really sick so that's mostly why I'm worried. I read somewhere that it's common for hamsters to make noises like this when they're digging or exploring but I never heard Misty (Who was very healthy) make any noises like this - in fact she didn't make any noises at all.
Maybe Bambi is just stressed or annoyed? I hope I'm not over reacting but after what happened with Miranda I don't want to take any chances... So are these noises normal? Does anyone elses hamsters make noises like this, or should we be worried? Thank you.

Re: Bambs is making weird noises.
What kind of bedding do you have her on currently? Strange wheezy/breathing noises can be signs of a URI, I'd recommend you put her on kaytee clean and cozy or fitch before carefresh as carefresh tends to be dusty. If the symptoms don't subside after a week or two after switching the bedding, a vet trip may be in order, or if her symptoms drastically worsen immediately take her to a qualified exotics vet. Best wishes for your ham

Hello, he's currently on the snowflake wood shavings. I don't know anywhere that sells Kaytee clean and cozy and fitch comes in really big bags so I'd have no where to put it and it's a lot to pay at once just for bedding, so Carefresh is really our only other option atm.. I'll keep a close eye on him hopefully changing his bedding will help but if it doesn't we'll definitely take him to the vets. Thank you!

Re: Bambs is making weird noises.
Kaytee Clean and Cozy is US exclusive, maybe Canada as well but definitely not available in the UK.Fitch is superior to Carefresh as you probably know, but the thought of being in big bags doesn't exactly apply if you can find a way to store it vertically instead of all in the original bag/bale Plus, you'd use a big portion to change out all the substrate you need to replace anyways,so you'd not need to store the full amount.Carefresh works out much more expensive as well, and you'd need to purchase it more often,so you'd just be wasting tons of money on something that may not completely fix the problem
