Well done - I'm sure it's not easy to stand up for yourself like that at college, something which I think those of us who work in education often forget!

Good on you for seeing it through, I'm so glad the ham has been separated.

I'm okay, thank you for asking The meeting about it was mostly about my request to take pictures if they didn't see there was a problem, so he was just basically explaining how photos would lead to bad press, which was off topic but understandable. I think it went as well as it could have and I can't see it causing any problems for me, think they might avoid putting me in the rodent room in the future though :')

I also found out they couldn't rehome him with me due to their pet license expiring which is a shame but they did mention the whole fact of it wouldn't be fair to give me an animal that required veterinary treatment/costs. (It has made me really want a dwarf regardless now!)

May request if I can make his nickname official, Tyrion! Named after a character from Game of Thrones who is a dwarf and has a scar across his face just like the little hamster, it seems very fitting!

Thank you everyone for your advice and support. I'm glad the result was just as we hoped!

Aww glad to hear he's ok.

I have had a few similar experiences with guinea pigs at my vet, but not Oreo, thankfully. I am their youngest volunteer (14) and am not allowed to touch the animals without supervision from a trained nurse or vet (apart from the nurse who brings her adorable kitten to work) so I have no say in the care. However, they once did a lump/abscess removal on the side of a piggy's face. They told the owner not to give him any hay until the wound healed over, despite me pointing out that hay should be 80% of a guinea pig's diet. That's a good few days without hay, and that's even worse after anaesthetic! I am absolutely powerless over the vets, although I know more about guinea pigs than they do!

If I say something, the head nurse lectures me about how I need to stop worrying about Oreo and I can't be a good vet if I care too much about animals. Last week's lecture was about me going on my phone (briefly when I had done most of my chores) to double check who was picking me up and at what time so I wouldn't be stranded! The first lecture was after they found out that I took Oreo to a better dental vet (best in the UK) despite them having numerous opportunities to treat him. They tried on him exactly what the better vet did! I then found out on the phone that I could take Triple Science for my GCSEs, which I was super happy about, so my conversation overran by a minute or two. This was after my hours of volunteering had finished and I was doing extra time. Most of the vets and nurses stand around on the phone or cuddling the animals than I do. And they at least get paid for it.

The other thing that will happen if I speak up, is I will be banned from the vets (probably) and will have to find volunteering elsewhere for my Duke of Edinburgh's Award. They did once tell me (when Oreo was critically ill) that they didn't want to see him for two weeks minimum. This was the point where I was terrified to come home from school in case Oreo had passed away .

Most of the vets and nurses are really nice though, especially the receptionist, and always ask me about Oreo. I mainly just dislike the head nurse as she has really upset me a few times .

Sorry for taking this off topic and ranting, I just need to get it out my system, because vets are supposed to care about the welfare of my pet and understand that I am knowledgable with small pets.

Oh the other thing they do. In consultation, they log onto The Guinea Pig Forum to check treatments and doses. I'm sorry, but I could do this for free and just ask for prescriptions. I understand if it's a really complex and rare condition, but for something as simple as a prescription for Metacam or treatment for bloat.

I think on any training course or in any work place, there is always someone with a power complex or who isn't caring enough. It's the same in the medical profession. There are some really excellent people - and some who aren't. It's hard when you're training/getting experience and on the lowest rung of the ladder and people won't listen - but make a note of it and when you are qualified and in charge you can knock such behaviour on the head. Don't worry too much as I think some owners don't always agree with vet advice either! And will make polite noises and do something else. I made polite noises after taking Charlie to the vets the first time, then came on here for advice and took him to see a different vet!

Grey Syrian. Glad all went ok. Be confident. Shame you may not be allowed in the hamster room again, but you have achieved a good thing. You've made them take notice and they will probably take more care now as someone else may complain otherwise. It's set a precedent that students have opinions on whether or not the living conditions of the animals are good enough or not.

When I say be confident - don't let anyone mark you down for anything unfairly because of this - if something like that happens you can go to a head of department and ask for it to be changed and explain.

When I did a teacher training course, the teacher I was assigned to as a mentor was absolutely terrible - had no control of the children and yelled at them constantly. Her feedback reports were very critical of me. So I used to start the feedback sessions by saying "can we start with the positives please". At the end of my placement there was a final report with boxes to be ticked and she failed me in one area. There had been no problem at intermediate report level so I said to her she wasn't allowed to fail me without having reported it to the school of education at intermediate level, at which point you would be given extra support.

It was very hard but I had to politely argue with her that you couldn't get to a final report and say something wasn't good enough when the point hadn't been highlighted along the way and extra support or training asked for. I won my point - and she changed it.

Sometimes people in charge are useless! And ignorant, or have a power complex or don't like the idea you might know more than them. Just be confident

There's only vet I've been to that I trust wholeheartedly with Oreo, but he's the dental specialist in Northampton. All other places always do seem to have one person who truly isn't caring enough with animals. Guinea pigs and hamsters often get some of the worst treatment .

Unfortunately, I can't be qualified as a vet for another ten years minimum, much as I would love to. I want to specialise in small furries like hamsters and guinea pigs .

I really wish I could speak out, but that would put my volunteering at risk, them banning Oreo (I still use them for emergencies) and me getting unpleasant lectures. Thankfully, they rarely see piggies and when they do, I normally offer advice in consultations and discharging (if they were hospitalised). I've never seen a hamster there, though.

The other vets in my area, Medivet, have the two animal hospitals which were both specifically featured on BBC a few years ago for fraud and animal abuse, so uncertain of using them apart from the one vet recommended by Tufty Fluff (Jasper's breeder). After reading P@H vet reviews, I am really put off by them.

Well said Serendipity.
I couldn't do a job like being a vet if I didn't care about the animals I saw. Some people in these jobs can be cold as ice when it comes to animals and personally shouldn't be in that job.
You learn by others and you'll also learn that not everyone is right. You have a good head on your shoulders and will go far in life.
