Default Almost 3 Yearold Syrian With Messy Bottom

Hi when my dad took out our almost 3 yearold female Syrian we noticed she had a dirty and possibly a little bloody bottom. She was willing to eat but she seemed sleepy and not wanting to run around like normal. My dad checked her cage but didn't find anything out of the ordinary. Being nearly 3 she is way past the Wet Tail age so we aren't sure what it could be. Is this just old age?

Hi there. Three years is very old for a hamster and it does seem as if she has had some kind of internal bleeding possibly. She could do to be seen by a vet who might prescribe something like antibiotics and/or pain relief. On the other hand it can be very stressful for an older hamster to have a vet visit and be taken out of their comfort zone. It might well be that she is nearing the end of her life. Do you have a good small animal vet nearby? You could maybe ring them for advice.

I kinda figured this might be a sign of her getting to old. We could call the ER Vet a couple blocks away but at this point I think it would be better just let her enjoy her days as she can. What do you do with a dead hamster when you live in a apartment and it's the dead of winter?

I'd monitor her closely and if she shows any signs of being in pain then I'd take her in. Sometimes they can linger and you need to make a choice in helping them to the bridge.
People do different things when their little one passes over.
Pot burials are popular with a large planter and then planting something like bulbs and a small shrub. You could place this on your patio. Some people ask for cremation at a pet crematorium. We bury ours in the garden. You may have a favourite park or walk where she could be laid to rest during a quiet spell or a friend or family with a garden? If you need to wait till spring with a hamster who has passed over then You need to prepare a plastic tub then wrap gently in a cloth and freeze till an appropriate time.

It's a difficult one. I'd be inclined to agree that letting her live out her life in peace is good. On the other hand she could be in pain or suffering if she is bleeding. If you call the vet they may suggest what the cause might be and what the options would be, or may at least prescribe some pain medication. So I think that would be a good idea.

I don't know about the US but in the Uk, some vets offer a cremation service for pets. Other people wrap the hammy in tissue paper and bury them in a large plant pot and grown something on top. If you are wanting a memorial that is (eg ashes returned or the plant as a memorial). Otherwise you'd need to find out where you'd be allowed to bury a pet and wrap her in tissue paper, and pop her in a shoe box or something and take her there. I have heard of people putting a hammy in the freezer until they had time to find a suitable burial place, but personally I think they deserve a bit of a burial or cremation and handling with care after death as they were in life.

Another issue, if she may have an infection is you can't just bury them anywhere on public land.

How is she today. If she seems to be suffering and there are still signs of blood it may be kinder to carefully put her in a cosy pet carrier with lots of bedding and take her to the vets, where they may decide euthanasia is the best option, or may prescribe something.

My vet will come to my house if needed so maybe you could ask if your vets offer that option? That way your hamster won't be stressed with the visit. If they don't offer that service then maybe try and call them and see if they can offer advice and help advise what is best.

Update: Now she's back to her normal activity, running around in her ball. No more dirty bottom at all.
