I think my hamster is overweight
Hi
I had my 2 WW dwarfs out today and noticed one was alot heavier than the other (my hammies live seperatly) What can I do to make her loose weight because I don't want it to interfear with her healthXx

Re: I think my hamster is overweight
How much do they weigh? Ideally they should be around 44g.
What do you feed them now? What mix?
When I had the same problem, my vet told me to stop giving them all treats and only give them a measured amount of their mix every day. If you feed them a mix and not pellets, this can be rather challenging, as they will most likely let you know whenever their favourite bits are gone

@penguin I'm not sure exactly how much they weigh, ill weigh them tomorrow when I get them out. I feed them burgess hamster mix the dwarf one. How much should I feed them I usually do about two teaspoons.

Re: I think my hamster is overweight
The amount to be fed depends on the weight of your hamster, but once you have that amount divided by 10 that should be a good indicator of how many grams you should be feeding and then calculate that into something easier to measure such as teaspoons.A 44g hamster, for example, would probably eat a bit under a teaspoon of food You could also just try and feed less often, like feeding every 2-3 days instead of every day.

Re: I think my hamster is overweight
Hamsters don't often get overweight & it sounds as though you're feeding the right amount so as long as your ham doesn't get too many treats don't reduce the amount of food.
Scatter feeding or hiding food around the cage or in things like little boxes or toilet roll treat toys helps keep them busy & active & they enjoy hunting out their food.
What wheel does she have & does she use it much? A good wheel & some out of cage time in a playpen with lots to explore should provide enough exercise.
They do vary a lot in size so she may be fine but knowing her weight & keeping a check on it regularly will help to know if she's doing ok.

the largest is around 50g and the smallest around 35-40g I don't have digital scales so I used my non digital kitchen scales.

Re: I think my hamster is overweight
I wouldn't worry then. You could cut down on treats for the large one if you really feel concerned, but generally I would say it's fine.
If he tops 55g then you might start cutting down on those treats

Re: I think my hamster is overweight
They both sound fine to me, my hybrids have averaged between 50-60g when fully grown without being overweight.
