Crusty eyes
Dexter always seems to have shut crusty eyes when he gets up. They usually open by themselves after hes been up a bit. Is this a sign of an infection and should i take him to the vets. Forgot to say hes a one year old syrian.

Re: Crusty eyes
This could be a number of things such as conjunctivitis
Or could be dust- what bedding do you use?

Re: Crusty eyes
If they open up after a while it probably isn't an infection so I wouldn't think he needs to see a vet a this point but if it gets any worse & you need to bath them to open them then it would be worth getting him checked out.
Dusty substrate & sometimes wood shavings can cause a problem with some hamsters.

Re: Crusty eyes
Carefresh is known for being extremely dusty which is more often than not a major issue for the delicate respiratory systems of small pets If you can get Fitch that would be much better and cheaper, but it depends on where you live for what substrate you can get.

Re: Crusty eyes
I used carefresh when I first began to keep hams & I did find it dusty, plenty of hams are fine with it but it might be worth considering a change.

Re: Crusty eyes
Usually mites and other parasites and such getting into substrate is an issue of improper storage.Freeze portions at a time and store it in an airtight container if possible, but do keep in mind if you keep substrate stored improperly you're running a big chance of giving yourself a problem.

Re: Crusty eyes
So many people use Fitch & I've only ever heard one person say that it gave their ham mites but their bag had got damp I think so proper storage is important but I would imagine it would be no different from any other substrate as far as the mite risk goes tbh.
