Default Torbor or dying!? Please help! Is my Hamtaro in torbor or dying?

Hamtaro is a male Syrian hamster. I got him when he was about 8 weeks old in April 2015. He is my first hamster, lives in a metre long cage etc.

Today I noticed he hasn't touched his food bowl for at least 24 hours. Took Hamtaro out of his nest and he did not object (usually he would squawk if I disturb his sleep! I put him on his soft hamster bed and put a blanket over him and my hand over him and sitting near the heater as he felt cold and stiff. I looked this up and I read it might be torbor.
It has now been over an hour he doesn't seem much better he woke up briefly but very groggy I tried to give him some scrambled egg he only took a tiny bit amd I gave him some water which he took a few sips of then went back to sleep. I tried to move him onto my chest but he squeaked! He feels stiff though! I'm scared it's Hogmanay so vet is closed.

So sorry this is happening, what is the temperature in your house where your hamster is? I believe it has to be pretty much below 65 degrees, maybe even closer to 60 degrees for torpor to occur.

No idea I run the heating a few hours a day but I do live in Scotland. I just burst into tears because I thought he was dead but he isn't! Is there a chamce he could just be sleeping? I've been running the heating for hours and I've been with him for 2 hours now I'm so worried.

It is possible that he is sleepy but it does sound to be more of a problem than that. If it is torpor then he needs to be warmed up but gently. If you can get him onto your chest with cover over him, then your body warmth will be best. I can't tell if torpor is the problem. He is only a few weeks off his second birthday so he is an elderly ham now. Once he revives, then try and give him some soft food as he has not eaten for a day. Do you have any porridge oats? If you soften a level teaspoon with water and microwave for a few seconds, once it has cooled to being warm not hot, then he might eat that from the spoon while you hold it.
The ideal indoor temperature is 18-25C

Fingers crossed he comes round. It might be torpor or it might be something else - it's hard to know. But the fact he came round a bit is very positive. As Coco says you need to warm them up gradually. Another tip I've seen is a warm hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket - he can lie on the blanket with another blanket over. But make sure the bottle isn't too hot through the blanket. Keep us posted. There can be some hard frosts overnight this time of year and that's when hammies are awake and active so it's possible it's torpor. Excellent news that he took some scrambled egg and water. If he is squeaking then warming him somewhere he feels comfortable sounds best.

I held him in my hands in a blanket up to my chest and he died there. :'( I am really upset. It wasn't until after he died I realised he appeared to be constipated, I am really angry at myself for not being aware of this. I'd given him fresh food the last 2 days and I don't know why this happened I had noticed he'd not been eating but with it winter I just assumed he was cold or getting old. I feel so bad for Hamtaro if I had noticed this earlier he might have pulled through

Dont blame yourself for this. You cannot be sure what was wrong with Hamtaro. It could have been a tumour if you could feel a lump. Hammies are very good at hiding being ill. He had a good long life with you and you clearly loved him and cared for him very much. You held him and kept him warm as he slipped away to the bridge. It was just his time and he would have known you were there.
Play well at the bridge Hamtaro, now you are restored to full health.
Hug for you floppy, it is never easy to lose our little ones. We all understand here.

I am so sorry - that is hard xxx I think it was his time and he was lucky to have had a loving owner and a good life with you and to have you holding him near the end. Our little hammies have such short lives - anything over 18 months is a bonus with them really. Play well little one.
