Default Nail Problems

Hello,
So Loki's nails are getting long again but I can't trim them, he becomes incredibly stressed and its impossible to do. I read somewhere about lining a box with sandpaper and popping him in for a few minutes a day (with me keeping a close eye on him of course)

Could this work? And are there any other tips bar a trip to the vets?
Thank you

The problem with sand paper is that for them to be on it long enough to trim nails at all it would probably hurt the feet so it's not really a good idea.
Once nails have grown too long there really isn't anything for it but to trim them, by the vet if need be.
For prevention rough natural surfaces in the cage can help, things like terracotta pots, granite or other stone with a slightly rough surface, plenty of wooden toys can help a bit too.

I find that the vet does the best job. It's expensive where I live because the policy of the vets is that you have to pay for an exam in order to get their nails trimmed, then you have to pay for the nail trim too.

I tried the sandy track wheel once every 2 weeks but I don't think it worked too good. I kind of got tired of keeping up with it as it is very inconvenient changing it out every 2 weeks for more than one hamster.

He has a lot of wooden toys etc but they don't seem to do anything at all...he's nearly 2 and causing him stress kills me. Have you got any decent flippers you can reccomend if I have to try again?

I think that we are more stressed about the vet than the hamster. Hope you find something that works for you. I just got a Syrian and she's going to the vet next week to get her nails trimmed. I'm not worried about stress with her as I know that she will adjust quickly, given her personality.

We use natural stone in our syrian boy's home, mainly under his water bottle or in front of his wheel depending on cage setup. This works for Ralph in keeping his nails trim. I got this tip from Erinsanimals on YouTube and we find it works! You can sanitize stone -if I remember there was a video on that too (Hopping Hammy if I recall). Little one also runs a lot on his wooden bendy bridges which probably help with keeping nails trim.
Hope you find the right solution for Loki. Love his name by the way
