Default Eating plastic

Hi,

I discovered this morning that the water bottle in one of my roborovskis' cages had fallen down in the night. We use bottles that stick to the wall of the cage with a plastic sucker. McNulty has apparently chewed off about a quarter of the plastic on the sucker bit.

Should I be worrying that he's eaten it? I couldn't see any little bits of plastic in the cage. He was running around as normal this morning, but I'm concerned that he might have some still waiting to be digested and I don't know what the effects would be.

Mine have done the same in the past (actually it was slightly worse - the bottle from the cage above fell in to the open top of their zoo zone and they nibbled at the suckers) and it didn't seem to do any harm. I think it will probably just pass straight through if he has eaten it.

I'm sure he'll be fine - I would of thought that when the bottle was being made it would probably of been considered that -if the plastic (or any part of the bottle really) got into the hamsters reach would it harm them,- and so I'm pretty sure they would of made it with materials that wouldn't harm a hamster.
hope this helps

He is fine - thank you so much for your replies. He's a naughty little monster but I love him! He's been scampering about as normal all weekend.

I'm glad to hear that!
Its amazing some of the things they will chomp their way through! I'm always amazed when i see little beggers that have chewed a huge hole in their cage and escaped!!

Hi,
my hamster started chewing the plastic in a corner of his first floor in his cage (Savic Cambridge), so i put some cardboard around the corner and i stuck a peper tissue there (lasts few days). Luckily he is a good boy now and he didnt choose a different corner.

anyway, he didnt hurt himself, so i think most often the biggest risk with chewing plastic might be with the teeth..
