Default Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?

Was wondering how much is the most money you've spent on one hamster? What species?

How to know when enough is enough even tho your hamster may be ill?

Koala is getting a 2nd round of ivomec, but if it doesn't work then I either leave him with mites or go to another vet. This vet says there isn't anything else she could do for him if all this ivomec doesn't work.

We've been lucky so far. Just with one Syrian, Charlie, and two small vet bills totalling £37. Difficult situation with Koala - sounds like going to another vet might be an idea (I just typed mite instead of might dur). I'm not sure what Ivomec is, but isn't there an injection they can give that gets rid of mites well and truly? I know there is for head lice! Or an oral medication at least, as a last resort when people have problems getting rid of them.

Thanks Amity. I guess it is topical Invermectin you have then CB is it? Living with mites permanently doesn't really sound like an option - particularly with all the extra cleaning you'd need to keep doing, adding to the stress. So a vet change might be the way to go and might mean less visits in future? I would try and ask about an injection.

Thanks both, he is getting ivermectine. 3ml 1x/day
It's almost 2 weeks now of oral doses with a syringe.

The vet refilled his bottle so he has another 2 weeks after his first round at no extra charge to refill the bottle.

I'm cleaning his cage every other morning. Just to keep his stress down but vets say 1x/day would be better?

Every other day is good I hope? I already paid $125

A second vet would be about the same unless they need to test for diabetes? I suppose I could refuse that?

This ivomec will hopefully work? Will see?

I have to pick him up by the scruff of his neck & pray I can be successful every morning.

I found that using a damp washcloth gives me a better grip than a dry one. He can'twiggle too much but he clenched his teeth so it's difficult to tell if he is getting the full dose? Afterwards I don't see any med on or around his mouth, so it's not dripping out so I think I'm successful. I'm going to try to aim for the cheek pouch here on out. I feel that he's taken the full dose every morning. He doesn't hate me for this, he probably thinks I'm his mommy? Cause that's how his mother carried him as a baby.

I've been fortunate too so far with vet trips. I had to take fudge for the first time a month or so ago and it cost around £28 I think. Yes serendipity there is an injection the vet can give to get rid of mites, fudge had it when he went. Even though the vet didn't think he had them he gave it just incase.

I've no idea how much I've spent at the vets over the years or even just with one ham although I guess Flynt's regular teeth clipping did add up a bit, at the time I'm usually too concerned about my hams to worry about how much it costs me!
I do think it's important though to find a vet you can really trust so your money is well spent & set aside a vet fund as however well we care for them you never know what might happen or when they might need vet care.

A vet fund can come in handy for other things too though! It's not just for vet bills, sometimes you might have something completely random like an emergency situation where a hamster's bottle breaks or a wheel breaks or anything like that. While spares should be easily accessed for those situations, there is always that off chance that something may go horribly wrong where spares aren't available or even spares break.

I have recently spent £400+ on my late Sherbet, including a emergency vet out of hours fee (£150) after an accident, Surgery to remove an abscess (£35), medicine (£30), plus multiple small animal consultation fee, multiple teeth trimming (£14 each) and then having Sherbet sadly put to sleep due to old age at 2 years and 3 months where her health declined so quickly after receiving treatment which sadly didn't improve her health that when I hard to make the hardest decision which was made down to her quality of life.
After Sherbet accident she returned to her normal self although her teeth had to be clipped every 2 weeks so the cost quickly added up with every teeth trim costing £14.00 each time. I personally don't worry about the cost of vet treatment as long as my hamster is the getting vet treatment they need.

I would say a having a vet fund is so important especially when you may need to pay out of hours fee to get your hamsters seen immediately by a vet if they injury or hurt themselves especially as hamsters tend to be awake after most vets are closed. Also you never know when your hamster may need vet treatment so this money should be set aside exclusively for vet trips.

It must be hard for you CB and also for Koala. I'm so sorry to hear that Koala got mites. I would personally see another vet and seeing if they could help treat Koala. But hopefully the ivomec will work.
