Re: Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?
You want to try & get it into his throat rather than his pouches to be sure he actually swallows it.

Re: Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?
Oh okay, was afraid of it getting in his lungs? It's a good amount of liquid. I'll see if I can drum up the courage to do it myself this week? That would be less stressful for Koala. I'm going to put some anti-biotic at the tip as he likes the taste of his anti-biotic.

You do have to be careful when giving it straight from the syringe but if you just aim for the pouches it will probably come out again which isn't what you want!
Will he not take it on any kind of food? I think you were going to try oatmeal but don't remember how you got on.

Re: Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?
No, there is too much meds for oatmeal unless he eats alot of it. I tested it out & cooked some up & he just had a nibble is all. Like I was saying I'm tired of picking him up. Think it's stressful on both of us, probably more me as he just goes right to the food bowl & runs on the wheel & climbs up & down the tube a couple times. I feel bad about it long after he does.
He still runs to my hands to let me pick him up. It's a small miracle how he finds familiarity in picking up my scent, in a bonded way He seems to know & feels good about being his mommy still.

Re: Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?
I'm surprised SKB Hamster has had the same experience. When Kiki got her first access I ended up spending over 400 eur as well. This paid for surgery, staying at the vets, antibiotics, fluids, and painkillers. Second time around it cost me around 200-250eur. I stopped counting.
After this and after reading about someone else having this experience, I would just keep setting money aside for vet trips, even if you end up with a stupid amount (as I thought 400 eur was).
About giving the hamster antibiotics, have you tried swaddling them in a teatowel? Sort of maling a hamster burrito and fold the extra cloth under them so they can't back off. Then put the syringe in their mouth at an angle and put the antibiotics in their cheek. With a bit of practice the whole thing takes 10-15 sec (including fumbling with the tea towel) and can be rewarded with a high valued treat.
I found that this works very well for me at least and it's fast which I like, as the hamster doesn't get as stressed. I wish I had to deal with this instead of giving eyedrops to my dwarf who always has his eyes closed. Now that is complicated

Re: Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?
I can get a good grip on him with a damp wash cloth...not sure what a tea towel is Penquin? I just lost my touch. Actually the meds are cold now & his anti-biotic is over. I was on a roll for 10 days.
If the meds are not refrigerated for 10 days as the vet never told me, does that affect the meds effectiveness?
The anti-biotic & ivermectine?

I hope I used the right word, this is a tea towel
You know the cloth that you always have in the kitchen to dry plates and what not?
If your vet didn't mention that they had to be refrigerated I wouldn't worry about it. The antibiotics I got didn't have to at least and I got it in the middle of the summer during a heatwave

We just don't have that term in the US We call them hand towels usually, but they're the same thing with a different name!

Re: Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?
Thanks Penquin & Amity so yesterday I was planning on taking him to the vet for med but then I thought to try it on my own & save time & money.
I tricked him with the taste of anti-biotic, actually he got the whole dose. Then I put the Ivomec syringe all the way in his mouth, off to the side and I was able to give him his full dose all at one time.
Then I decided not to clean his cage today. So I'm really trying to keep his stress down. Tomorrow I'll clean his cage. I only have enough meds for 2-3 more days.

Re: Vet costs, most you've spent on one hamster?
I know I may be jumping ahead but what if neither vet can get rid of the mites due to an bigger internal health issue? She mentioned Cushings or lymphoma?
What if this second vet can't get rid of the mites either? Is it cruel to let your hamster suffer with mites the rest of his life?
He still acts like a hamster although he is more reclusive and really suffering from the mites?
