It could be many things It is very possible that it is respiratory related,if that is the case it can be caused by things like plastic accessories(tubes, houses, and other things like that)as well as substrate among other things.

The only way to be certain what it is is to evaluate your setup, make sure nothing in the cage can cause respiratory issues, and if there is anything in there that can cause respiratory issues immediately remove it and if needed replace it with respiratory system friendly things instead.

Other than that, you need to take your hamster to the vet as soon as possible. If it is a respiratory infection or anything like that, medication will be needed.

Hello there and welcome to Hamster Central.

I'm sorry to hear that your hamster isn't well and given his symptoms I would certainly recommend getting him checked out by a vet to see what's going on. Some vets are more experienced with hamsters than others so if you can it's best to look for an exotics vet but if there aren't any within a reasonable travelling time then don't let that put you off of seeking advice.

Sorry to hear your ham is so unwell, he really is a good age now & they are prone to more problems as they get older, it could be that he has a respiratory problem or it could be related to a stroke which isn't uncommon in elderly hams, I would get him to the vet as soon as you can & hopefully they will be able to help.

I doubt it has anything to do with his set up unless you made sudden changes so just keep things as they are, any changes could just stress him out, unless he is having trouble accessing food or water, if that's the case then you may need to change his layout to make things easier for him.

Sorry to hear that he is unwell, to me that sounds like a respiratory infection so I'd get it checked out by a vet if you haven't already. Hope he recovers soon xx

Hi cathj88, has this come on suddenly and has he shown any improvement since you posted yesterday? He is a good age and sometimes hamsters will suddenly look of show signs of something wrong and then bounce back again, but the symptoms you describe sound as though something is amiss. Laboured breathing and noises could mean he`s feeling pain in some form and compensating. Is he eating/drinking still?

Does he stumble or seems unable to stay upright? Let us know what`s happened since you posted.
