Default Air Flow?

Does anyone know how much air flow a hamster needs in mm2?

Weird question but would be great to know the answer!

Ill try to help but im confused by what your asking so if I don't give you the right answer reply with your question in a bit more depth and ill try to help.
If your talking about mesh the smallest size id get would be the 6mm squares.
You wouldn't be able to put an exact figure on how much ventilation a hamster needs as it depends on the size of your cage.

Okay, thanks Ren!

Would this be adequate for the Detolf - having two ventilation grilles on each side? Each grille measures 22.9cm by 7.6 cm. What do you think? So in total that's 25.8cm by 16.2cm on each side, adding up to 30,000mm2 of air flow, whatever that means!!

Honestly a lid would be better.Without good ventilation, tank style cages can get very smelly in no time at all even if they're large! That usually means having a lid,not just tiny ventilation panels. It isn't even hard to make a lid,as long as you can use a stapler and get wood cut at a hardware store or lumber store!

Hey Amity!

Unfortunately my dads really against me making a lid for the cage. Would it be better just to buy two cages instead? I'm super anxious about the little ones not getting enough ventilation

Cages can work, especially for dwarf hamsters.100 cm x 50 cm(length and width,be extremely careful with dimensions as these can be really misleading at times!)for a dwarf,or for a Syrian there is a 100 cm x 100 cm rabbit cage you can get on Amazon as well as Little Pet Warehouse. It's intended as a guinea pig/rabbit cage, but it is great for Syrians once the sides are properly meshed while for a dwarf cage there are tons and tons of 100 x 50 options

As long as the bottom can either hold enough substrate to burrow in(10.16 cm for robos,15.24 cm for other dwarf species, and 30.48 for Syrians)or can have attached borders to keep the substrate inside the cage it is completely fine to have a wire cage.Of course, you do want to make sure the cage itself has lots of roof cover and hiding places such as bendy bridges and levels!

Just posted right at the same time but that's great news
