Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
Hi again!
I have another question about Fili - I'm a bit worried about his weight - any advice on food that can help him gain a bit of weight?
Thanks!

Generally foods that are high in healthy fats work well for weight gain.Things like seeds and nuts are fairly high in healthy fats,so they're a good option as long as you make sure the seeds or nuts are completely plain with nothing added such as preservatives or salt, but if there are preservatives they must be natural and safe ones.

Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
He does eat lots of seeds and nuts! I've just been hoping that when he gets less ill he'll put on a bit of weight naturally I guess? But he's still very thin so if there's anything I could give him to speed up weight gain that would be great.

Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
Pumpkin seeds and pecan nuts are some of the highest calorie supplements and have healthy fats. I also got these when giving Charlie supplements (below). He would have pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds one day, pecan and a bit of cheese another day, linseed and a science selective biscuit another day, and so on. He put all his 15g back on in a week (those were all supplements as well as his regular food and veg and I put them in a separate pot).

You can get the Linwoods range in Holland and Barret. I just put half a teaspoon out on a little dish.

Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
If he's already eating lots of nuts & seeds then he doesn't really need more of the same, have you tried some extra protein foods like plain cooked chicken, boiled or scrambled egg or tofu? Plain dry oats are a good all round food too.
His main mix should be giving him the nutrients he needs really as long as he is eating it & not being picky & if he's still having veg that will help generally too so it may just be that he will gain more weight when his health improves.

Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
Hi!
Thanks for all the help.
He seemed to be getting better for a bit, and then suddenly lost all his fur again and he's scratching loads and his skin is red. The vet has no idea what to do any more, he's had basically every mite treatment under the sun!
This seems to keep happening in a cycle... it's got really bad this time though, and I'm worried.
Any suggestions???? He's back on Baytril at the moment. He hates it, but it did improve things a bit last time.

On the bright side though, he does seem to have gained a tiny bit of weight! Not much, but he's on the right track!

Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
If he's put on some weight then that is at least a one positive sign!
That's a shame, if it's happening in cycles then I guess the only thing is to go back to basics & try & consider anything & everything that might help or hinder his recovery.
Just a few things that come to mind, maybe others will think of something else that could be a factor...
Are you still using the fitch for substrate?
What else does he have in his cage? Anything mites may be hiding away in do you think?
Does he have a sand bath?
What supplementary foods & main mix are you using?
Have you tried the evening primrose oil or something like the Omega oil & did you stop the cod liver oil?
Has he had any probiotics while all this has been going on?
Is there anything in his cage or environment generally that could possibly be causing him stress?

Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
If there's anything in terms of wood or other items, replace them with ceramic, plastic, etc, things which can be easily sterilized in general that won't harbor mites. That is one idea I have which might help!

Re: Hamster losing fur - help!!!
I think that's mostly been done Amity but I did wonder if there might be something left that could still be a problem.
