Default One of his eyes is red?

So last night I was giving my hamster a little fuss, and when he looked up at me, one of his eyes looked like it had turned red?

Usually both of his eyes look normal, but when he looks up, it seems the light reflects some red in his left eye. I was wondering if there was anything wrong with his eye or he just happens to have two different coloured eyes in general.

Not sure what to think, but it's the first time I've noticed this and I've only had him since June 25th

It could be a very dark shade of red that looks black without lighting showing that it's really red and not black! Two eyes that are different, however,is not necessarily something I've never heard of but it isn't a common thing I've heard of either and it might be impossible in hamsters.

If they have always been the same & it's just turned red then there is a chance there may be something wrong with the eye so it may be worth getting it looked at to be sure.

Your hammie does look to have a patterned coat and that does sometimes come with red eyes and can mean one is red and one is black.
It depends on what the eye looks like. Does it look as if there is a pool of red blood in the eye? They can have bleeds into the eye and this can happen from glaucoma, a fall or knock or just randomly. The vet can check inside the eye and they would usually prescribe a steroid drop for the inflammation. It often resolves and the blood eventually gets resorbed however it can also occur again. The sight in that eye may be affected.
If there is any swelling or red blood in the eye I'd see a vet for checking.

I'm going to take him to see a vet on friday. Just to be safe

I will admit though, it's only the light reflection when he looks up, other than that, you don't really see it, it really more of a reflection thing. His eye hasn't swollen and he's being going about doing all his usual hammy things. Eating and drinking fine too.

I do think it is because he has the pattern Saffie and he is likely a white belly gene carrier. This gives a red backglow to the eyes when seen in a certain light. It's a way of working out if a pattern hamster is a Wh gene carrier.
If he seems well I wouldn't stress him unless the eye looks abnormal/

I hope that is the case! I really don't want anything going wrong as I've only had him a short while!

I'm really sorry I don't have a better picture, he's not one to stay still. but you can see here, his eyes look relatively similar but there is a super dark dark red hue to his right eye. Like you really have to squint at the image. Also realised it's his right eye, not left because I'm a silly person not being able to tell right from left haha.

Edit// I got a better picture

I do think it's the red back glow from being a Wh carrier and having a pattern but if you feel more comfortable getting it checked then by all means pop him along.

Well I found blood on the corner of his eye last night so I took him to the vets today. He wasn't exactly impressed and she actually dropped him while trying to examine his eye. I really hope that didn't shock him too much! I don't want something like wet tail to trigger from stress.

She told me he might have just scratched it a little bit and I should just monitor him for now, like if any swelling occurs bring him back in and he'll be given some drops. She said other than that, it should just heal on it's own and that he looked completely fine. She also checked him over after dropping him like that. I also didn't get charged because of that too, just right! Dropping my poor baby like that.

So fingers crossed he calms down after that visit and his eye clears up on it's own.
