Default Warning for bedding

Please heed my warning and avoid [product name removed] for a few weeks. Shiitake has gotten mites from them. I am not the only one experiencing this problem with the bedding.
I spent €50 on vet visits last month to clear up the problem and as a 15 year old I struggled to afford it.

I'm sorry your hamster developed mites from a bedding material you used. There's nothing wrong with warning people about the risk of certain things carrying mites, but please try and remember the forum rules and refrain from naming specific products/companies in future, thanks.

I hope Shiitake has fully recovered from her mites now? If you still have some of that bedding material you could consider freezing it before use, I've heard a lot of people say that should kill off any mites in it.

Ren, would you mind PMing me about which bedding you referred to? I have my hamster at the vet on Friday due to sore looking patches of skin, I was worried it is mites so am wondering if you are referring to the bedding I have

I have never had mite issues with any substrate I've used. And you can freeze bedding before use if there are any concerns. However some hamsters can develop allergies to any kind of wood substrate, and sometimes to other substrates, and that can also cause itching and skin rashes (said that for Sarah as it might not be mites). Paper based substrates like Fitch are hypoallergenic though. Hope Shitake is doing ok I have heard of Hamsters getting mites from bedding, but they naturally have mites on their skin all the time and an outbreak can sometimes mean a low immune system or something. I do worry about hay having mites though! So I always freeze anything that has hay stuck to it!

Your first action should be to contact the manufacturer and customer services of the store you bought it from to advise them of the problem. Return the bedding and ask them to have it checked for contamination and let you know of the results.
I hope you get satisfactory feedback from them.

Thanks Serendipity I actually took out the bedding I had put in his cage just in case it was that causing his red patches. It's been2 days and they are slightly less red so I'm suspecting an allergy but I'm taking him to see a vet tomorrow just in case
