I'm not very pleased with the vet, as you say someone else might have just given the 1ml dose and probably killed the poor hamster.

He gave me some topical bug treatment aswell "just in case", as he's got some fur loss on his back end, I don't dare give it to him without checking the dosage. Given that he and Glowy regularly share the same space, I'm not convinced it is due to mites (not external ones anyway) as Glowy is the picture of health. Y

Hmm - what has Nibble been up to?!! Fur loss at his back end and a broken leg. Is there anything he can squeeze under or behind in his cage?

I'm really scratching my head about it. I did work out at one point he was rubbing fur off squeezing between his hay house and a shelf, but I moved that around. He's really clumsy which doesn't help, and I didn't find him caught up, he'd done whatever he did and gone back to his nest. There wasn't an open wound so no tell tale blood to find.

He's not pleased with me today bless him - he's feeling better enough to have realised he's in a very small space and he doesn't like it. I'd given him his nest box but I had to take it away last night as he was trying to climb it and chew his way out! He keeps clattering his teeth at me and squeaking lol that's my Nibble!

I wouldn`t use the topical mite treatment as hair loss can be caused by other things. Mites generally cause a hamster to scratch a lot, more than would be normal and in doing so, they can cause bald patches and scabs around the face/neck/shoulder areas. Ivermectin (usual treatment for mites by vets) is a nerve agent and attacks the central nervous system of the parasites. It can cause the hamster to become a bit hyper active, so when applying the drop of liquid onto the parted fur, it`s wise to monitor their behaviour for an hour afterwards and be done when the hamster is fully awake and alert. But as said, always check these things are the correct dosage and strength for the animal being treated before putting them anywhere near the stuff.

Now the hay house you mention? Is it one of those heavy-ish huts with the downward pointing straw roof? Personally, given his predicament, I would look for a cardboard shoe box or something similar. Boxes are much lighter, easily chewed and safe. I use nothing else. Turn the box upside down (no floor) so he can dig into the substrate beneath. Cut a couple of exit doors into the box and place some nesting material inside and at the door for him to take in himself. I think this would work better for him. He shouldn`t notice the change if you just replace the house and use the old substrate/nesting to keep his own scent around. x

His hair loss is all on his back end and he doesn't scratch.

His hay house was one of those small carrot cottage things, just used as a step to climb up on his shelf. I've binned it now anyway as I cleared out his big cage while he's convalescing. His nest box is a fairly large wooden one with no bottom.

At the moment he is in a teeny cage (pretty much the same as the p@h medium cage) with just a big pile of toilet roll to nest in (obviously he has lots of substrate, food water and potty/sandbath too....). I get him out for a cuddle regularly but he's pretty bored in there!

He's already walking pretty well on his gammy leg and continues to be bright as a button, so hopefully it won't be too long before he can go back to his hamster palace.

Hope he recovers well The carrot cottage won't have caused an issue. I suppose he could have got a foot trapped in the bars or something if climbing. Do you think he might have been tunneling under his house? They do that sometimes and if there's not much gap that could rub. Anyway, I'm sure you'll be giving his cage a bit of a look over before he goes back into it. Poor Nibble being in a little cage after his lovely big Barney, but lots of paper bedding sounds nice and cosy . He's lucky to have you giving him excellent care.
