That's a good point alfredham. At the moment i am struggling to give fudge his antibiotics as he wont take from syringe and even tiny bits of food to mix it in I'm not sure if he's taking it straight away, but am more persuaded that he doesn't really need them as I don't think he has any bacterial problem. Antibiotics can be harsh and I don't want to give unnecessarily.

I know what you mean about these kind of drugs and not wanting to give them unless really necessary. If he's already started to have some, it might be an idea to try and finish them if you can though (the usual advice with antibiotics). Lots of hams have had them and I think they recommend taking a probiotic afterwards. I think it's supposed to help with mites, but if he didn't do a skin scraping to confirm whether it was mites or not I can understand your reluctance to give them. I would go with your instincts If he's happy and healthy you can see how he goes and then think again.

Instead of waiting to do probiotics after antibiotics you could probably just give them both at the same time and keep giving probiotics for a few days after the antibiotics run out.

Have you tried putting something yummy like porridge or baby food on the end of the syringe and squirting it in when they try to eat it?

Serendipity - Yeah to finish them is what your supposed to do but I was unable to give him this mornings does and last nights dose was left (I put it over a few oats)
He's too clever...lol. Baby food would be ideal and porridge too but especially with porridge you have to make it up and when he's out for a pee it's a small window of opportunity! Especially in the morning as I am up quite early for work. Dear me what would it be like if he really did need them!

Alfredham - Yes with the baby foods would defo come in handy for antibiotics as well as a supplement. I know you are a bit of an expert serendipity I did see a thread you posted so will have to have a look again to see what ones are suitable. Would come in handy especially for antibiotics.

Amityville - I don't really know that much about probiotics for hams but I don't know if il continue with the antibiotics I really don't think he needs them. Will just keep on with the diet and monitor him and see how he goes. Thanks though for the advice! That's good to know if I should ever have to give antibiotics in the future.

That sounds good - he probably doesn't need them and you can always get them prescribed again if he does. He'd probably suss them out whatever you put them in.

If he only had one dose of the antibiotics he may well be fine with leaving them off, it doesn't sound as though he really needs them.

I used to make up a small amount of porridge & keep it in the fridge for a day or two, get a teaspoon (or however much you need) out around the time you intend to feed it to warm up a little & then it's ready when you need it.

Probiotics are never a bad thing, they can help to give the immune system a bit of a boost even when they aren't on antibiotics, I always give them if mine are on meds of any kind & give a dose once a week anyway even with healthy hams.
