Withdrawn behaviour
Hello, I hope that someone can help me. Last weekend I adopted a rescue dwarf hamster. She seems very timid, but last night she was starting to come out of her shell, and running and climbing.
Then later on, she hid and became entirely motionless, to the point where I thought she had died!
She then went back to her nest, and I didn't see her again.
Has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour? I should mention that she is especially timid.
Thanks.

Re: Withdrawn behaviour
That sounds quite normal when you've only had her for such a short time, they can be timid to begin with, especially with a rescue if you don't know the history so you have to be patient with them, they may gain a little confidence then appear to take a step back but as long as you go slowly with the interaction & don't rush things they will continue to make more progress.
I would keep doing the tissue trick for a while, fresh tissue daily, spend lots of time quietly talking & maybe offer a treat through the bars (if you have barred cage) but leave it at that for a bit longer, keep cleaning to a minimum, just spot cleaning & give her time to settle into her new home.

Re: Withdrawn behaviour
Thanks very much, I think I am just over reacting, I have a Syrian too, and the behaviour in contrast is massive.. I just have to remember that she wasn't very confident to begin with either.
It was the motionless behaviour that concerned me, it really scared me!

Re: Withdrawn behaviour
It can be a bit scary when they freeze but it's perfectly normal behaviour for a nervous ham, I'm sure she'll come round, all hams are so different regardless of species you never really know how long taming & bonding will take but they do get there in the end!
